Chapter 11
Cara’s POV
My body lay still in the hospital bed as my mind dreamed.
When I was young, barely old enough to be called a child instead of a baby. My hands were small, and I wasn’t quite sure on
my feet.
Looking around, the trees towered over me, I must have lost my way, there was no sign of a trail or footpath. Bright, melodious birdsong caught my ear, and I followed the sound.
Suddenly, the birdsong turned into the sound of crying. It was a boy. He couldn’t have been much older than me.
He was sitting under an enormous oak tree, face in my hands. A stick snapped under my foot, and he looked up with big
blue eyes.
“Are you lost, too?” I asked him.
He wiped his tears, nodding his little head.
“C’mon.” I offered him my hand with a smile. I think we need to go this way,” I said, pointing towards the river that could be seen from a distance through the trees.
I helped him up and we walked hand in hand towards the flowing water. I was pretty sure that this might be the same river that crossed under the highway. If we could just get to the road, I figured we’d find an adult soon after that.
Sure enough, the sounds of the river were accompanied by the sounds of vehicles. The highway was close now,

I close my eyes again and lay my head back on the pillow, trying to process the dream I just woke from.
The whole thing seemed so real, almost like a memory. But I can’t think of a time I’ve ever felt that lost….
Except when I was three years old.
When Pack DarkWood found me as an orphaned pup.
My head is still fuzzy, but I try to think back to what Grandmother, the she-wolf who raised me, used to tell me about my past. She said I’d been found wandering… wandering in the woods!
