Officer Baldwin greeted him with genuine warmth. “Mr. Morris, good to see you again! How’ve you been? The guys at the station really miss you. When are you coming by to catch up?”
The Sharps were floored. As far as they knew, Morris had done time—they’d always figured he was the sort of person the cops looked down on. It never crossed their minds that he’d be on such friendly terms with the police.
Morris replied coolly, “I won’t be going back there. But please, pass along my best to everyone. Tell them I wish them all the luck in the world and smooth sailing ahead.”
Officer Baldwin’s eyes suddenly grew misty, his voice thick with emotion. “I’ll let them know. Thank you.”
Then, lowering his voice, Officer Baldwin leaned in. “Since these are your folks—and after everything you’ve done for us—how about we cut her a little slack? Maybe give her a couple extra hours? What do you think?”
He tried to keep it quiet, but the Sharps heard every word.
The old lady brightened, but her hope was short-lived—Morris shot her down without hesitation.
“If I do what makes you happy, my wife won’t be happy.”
“Your wife? You got married? Congratulations! Why didn’t you tell us? Who’s the lucky lady?”
A gentle happiness lit up Nathan’s face. “You know her. It’s Ashley.”
Officer Baldwin’s eyes went wide. “I knew you liked her! You two finally made it happen? That’s fantastic! You’re a lucky guy, Nathan. I always said Ashley was the best thing that ever happened to you. Don’t you dare let her down—she was the only one who stuck by you when things got tough.”
Morris smiled. “I know.”
Officer Baldwin turned to the family matriarch. “Ma’am, I have to say, Ashley and Mr. Morris are perfect for each other. After everything they’ve been through together, why would you want to come between them? As the saying goes, it’s better to build a temple than break up a marriage.”
The old lady’s face turned a deep shade of gray.
