Reborn From Ashes novel Chapter 54

"I came home from school today, only to be interrogated by Julia about her missing pearl earrings. I've never been to the second floor, so how could I have seen them?

"It's a funny thought. The book I read today had the same situation—the heroine lost her pearl earrings, but they were eventually found. It was a happy ending for everyone.

"But here I am, being questioned like I stole them. I didn't take them, and I haven't been to the second floor in ages! Why doesn't anyone believe me?"

When Anna read this part, her brow furrowed again. This story sounded familiar. She vaguely recalled hearing about it as it happened not long after Hayden had joined the Sterling family.

Anna hadn't paid much attention at the time and only caught bits of conversation in the family group chat. Lily had often complained about Hayden and all the trouble he caused.

As time passed, though, Hayden's actions had gotten so vexing that even Lily had stopped bringing him up.

Anna remembered when Julie lost a pair of purple pearl earrings. These earrings were very rare and expensive, worth around a hundred thousand dollars.

While that sum wasn't much for the Sterling family, those earrings held special meaning for Julia.

Hayden was the only one in the entire house suspected of stealing them. No matter how harshly they interrogated him or how cruel their words were, he insisted he knew nothing about it.

In the end, the matter remained unresolved.

Anna let out a small sigh, not wanting to dwell on the past, and continued flipping to the next page.

"Today's book wasn't interesting at all. No plot and nothing memorable. But at least when I'm reading, I can forget all the unhappy things.

A suspicion crept into her mind—could it have been Morgan? As a prank? But Morgan always seemed so well-behaved.

After a moment of silence, she turned to the next page.

"I didn't drink the warm milk. I'm feeling worse, not just physically but mentally too. Morgan said the food I made had no salt, so he added a whole spoonful of it. But I wasn't making food; I was warming up the milk!

"I tried to explain, but he started crying, apologizing over and over, saying he just wanted to help. I know he meant well, but his cries brought Mom, Dad, and my sisters running.

"They all thought I bullied Morgan and scolded me for being ungrateful. I tried to explain, coughing all the while, but no one cared that I was sick."

Anna gripped the notebook tighter, her fingers pressing into the pages. Was it really like this? Warm milk… with salt?
