“Give me a break, James,” Vivian said coldly. “What did you do earlier at the gates of Pine Mist Island? What did you say to your ex-wife? You didn’t treasure her when you were married, and now you’re full of regret? Pathetic.” She hung up the phone, her face dark.
From everything James had said, Vivian could tell—he was a coward. A complete coward.
And because of that, her entire plan had fallen apart.
Worse yet, that person had vanished. If they got caught…
She bit her lip, uneasy. Her grandfather had probably already caught wind of what happened.
It was past eleven. Guests had started leaving the party one by one, and by the time the staff saw the last guest out, it was already midnight.
One final table of food remained. Sarah asked the staff to bring over another table to sit around.
Scarlett and Steven were glued to each other, while Mia and Lucas sat chatting about gossip in the entertainment industry.
Melvin had already left—he had an early morning ahead. Before leaving, he turned to Zachary and, for the first time, said, “Make sure you send Sarah home safely.”
Zachary accepted without hesitation.
The table was filled with dishes and rare red wine. Mia eagerly volunteered to open and pour the wine, and with Lucas’s help, she efficiently filled each glass.
Zachary pushed his wine glass aside. “I’m not drinking tonight.”
“Hey, that’s cheating!” Mia huffed, stomping her foot.
“I’ve got to drive Sarah home,” he replied.
That shut her up instantly.
Scarlett noticed the anger in his eyes and finally quieted down.
From that moment on, Steven didn’t spare Lucas another glance. He hated the way Scarlett looked at him—even if it was just admiration for a movie star.
“Cheers!” someone called.
The next hour passed with the sound of Steven challenging Lucas to drink after drink.
Zachary didn’t drink, and Scarlett, Mia, and Sarah each held a wine glass, sipping elegantly.
Sarah underestimated the strength of the wine. After just one sip, a wave of heat burned through her chest.
The drinking continued for a full hour. In the end, the only two who remained sober were Zachary and Lucas.
