That was because a week earlier, another child in the same hospital had already matched with that heart. Once a heart was successfully matched, it would no longer appear in the matching database.
That's when he began plotting to steal the heart.
Melvin's voice was soft, as if whispering right in his ear, yet it thundered through him, making it impossible to stay calm.
"To get that heart, you tried every method—money, influence, you used everything. But what broke you was that the other child's family had more power than you. You even considered killing that child."
Dr. Xavier looked at Melvin with terror. He couldn't understand how Melvin knew so much detail about something he'd done in complete secrecy—as if he'd been watching the whole time.
He screamed like a madman, "Shut up! I don't understand a word you're saying. If you think my report is fake, go ahead and call the police."
Melvin continued calmly, "You thought you were being discreet, but from the moment that thought entered your head, every effort and action you took left evidence. This is enough to destroy you. But after the successful heart surgery, even though the boy's parents protested, you faced no punishment. Someone was protecting you."
"Sir, I've been telling you from the beginning that I don't understand what you're saying. Your story is very creative, but unfortunately, it's not my story." Dr. Xavier’s face remained cold as he pointed toward the door again, signaling for them to leave.
Sarah hadn't spoken yet—she was observing, studying the entire office. On the mahogany desk sat a photo album, yellowed with age, clearly not from recent years. It showed a family of three—presumably Dr. Xavier’s family.
She decided to probe. "Dr. Xavier, hacking into the organ database must have cost quite a bit, didn't it?"
Dr. Xavier’s eyes blazed with fury. "Haven't you heard anything I've been saying? I told you I never did such things. Please leave."
"Six months ago, you used money and connections to obtain that heart, preventing the boy from getting the heart that should have been his at the crucial moment. He died on the operating table. That family risked everything to report the incident up the chain, yet instead of being disciplined, you kept your position untouched. Your massive debts were paid off too. I'm curious—how did you get that money? How did you smooth over the whole affair?" Sarah said coldly.
Sarah immediately followed Melvin's lead. "Dr. Xavier, good luck to you."
"Wait!" Dr. Xavier called out urgently.
He'd worked so hard to reach this position, worked so hard to smooth over that incident—he absolutely couldn't let it all collapse now!
Melvin stopped. "Ready to talk?"
"Could we... could we talk somewhere else?" Dr. Xavier said nervously.
