[Thank you.]
Scott ignored the message, pretending as though he did not even hear his phone vibrate.
Soon, his phone screen went dark again, just like the pitch-black night sky that surrounded him.
The next morning, Naomi was awoken by her ringtone. She opened her eyelids, sat up in bed, and reached out to grab her phone.
Her phone was on her nightstand, buzzing as her ringtone echoed through the room. She glanced at the caller ID.
Amelia.
Naomi rubbed her eyes and checked the time. It was only 6:50 a.m.
Why was Amelia calling her so early in the morning?
The most likely explanation was that Amelia pulled an all-nighter again, or perhaps she had to get up incredibly early to go on a business trip. Otherwise, she would never call Naomi at such an ungodly hour.
Naomi yawned and picked up the call. "Hello, Amelia."
Amelia could tell instantly from her soft, rather muffled voice that she just woke up. "Did I wake you?"
"More or less." Naomi glanced out the window. Someone drew the curtains while she was asleep, so there was only a faint glow of the sun outside that seeped into the room between the cracks.
All of a sudden, something occurred to her, and she turned to glance at the couch.
"What time did you sleep last night?" Naomi changed the topic in hopes it would distract Amelia.
"About 2 a.m. I think I slept two hours at most," Amelia replied, but soon she realized her mistake and snapped, "Hey, don't try to change the subject! Do you think you can fool me?"
Naomi sighed. "I don't."
"Well, why aren't you answering my question? Not only are you dodging my question but you're even trying to change the subject. What are you trying to hide from me?"
Naomi had no choice but to confess, "I've been very busy recently, and Charles has just recently started work too. He's been busy as well, so we both decided not to rush things and instead take it slow."
"Tsk, tsk," Amelia snickered. "Take things slow? You and Scott got married not long after knowing each other. Why have you decided to take things slow this time around? Be honest with me, Naomi. Are you still hung up over Scott?"
