Red chilies were floating in the big white porcelain soup bowl, letting out the tantalizing aroma. The proprietress recognized that Simon was a doctor and had brought two cold dishes in person for them.
Sitting at the other side, Addy carefully scooped out the peppers with a spoon.
When Emily inadvertently raised her head, she happened to find that Addy was looking at Simon with her eyes full of affection. Seeing that, Emily could not help but hold her cup tight.
Simon fetched a piece of fish and put it on Emily's plate after picking all the fishbones out. Simon's eyes slanted to her, and he said lazily, "What are you doing? Eat!"
"Okay!" Emily came to herself and put the fish into her mouth.
The fish tasted tender and well-flavored with spices, which gave her a good appetite. She couldn't help eating two mouthfuls of rice.
Addy, who was sitting on the opposite side, was also swallowing the food in her mouth. She said with a smile, "By the way, Simon, do you remember the librarian at Columbya
University?"
"Of course. He was very kind. Every weekend, he would help me occupy a seat in the library," Simon nodded.
Addy continued with a smile, "He married a beautiful blonde woman as he wished. I received a phone call from him last night. He told me that they have a mixed-blood baby!" "That's great news!" Simon said and glanced at Emily.
Emily understood what that glance meant-Simon also wanted to have a baby. Feeling parched, she picked up the cup of water and drank.
Addy said something else that but Emily neglected it. Then, Simon's phone rang from beside her. Simon interrupted, "Sorry, I have to answer this call!"
The phone call was short. After it ended, Simon frowned.
Seeing that Simon looked serious, Emily guessed that it might be a call from the hospital. When she was about to ask, Addy took a step ahead of her.
"Simon. What's wrong?"
Hearing this, Simon put down his mobile phone and replied, "The hospital just transferred an emergency patient from the neighboring county. He needs heart surgery immediately. There is only one doctor on duty in the department at noon. I have to go back!"
"You should go back immediately!" Addy said hurriedly, took a look at Emily, and said with a smile, "Being a doctor means great responsibility. Simon, you don't have to worry about us. You can leave us here!"
"Okay," Simon nodded. The hospital was in urgent need. He didn't even have time to finish eating before he stood up from his chair. He glanced at Addy and then looked at Emily, who lowered her head.
Simon put his hand on Emily's shoulder.
She raised her head and saw him taking out the wallet from his trouser pocket. He put it in front of her and said with a smile, "Addy is our guest. We should pay for the meal. I will go back to the hospital now. Mrs. Chin, later you pay!"
Simon's word was short, emphasizing that Emily was his wife.
"Sure!" Emily felt a little relaxed.
Simon withdrew his hand and quickly walked out of the restaurant with his mobile phone. Through the window glass, Simon's tall figure could be seen. He quickly walked through the zebra crossing in the sun and soon walked into the hospital building.
When Emily stopped looking, she saw that Addy was still looking out of the window with her eyes fixed.
After a long while, Addy seemed to realize that she had forgotten herself. She turned her head in a hurry and smiled at Emily awkwardly.
Addy smiled and looked at her sincerely. "Thank you for staying by Simon's side during the four years when I was not here. I know your marriage is concerted!"
Hearing that, Emily was shocked.
"How did you..." Emily stammered in shock.
There was only one possibility that Addy could know about their agreement...
Emily clenched her hand. She asked with her voice trembled, "Did he tell you that?"
Addy's expression paused slightly. She had overheard it by accident last time in the barbershop. After a little hesitation, she finally chose not to answer but asked in a soft voice, "Emily, it's not important, is it?"
Emily felt suffocated and feeble on the chair.
"That's right, that's not important..."
She looked at Addy with a poker face. Addy, whose beautiful almond eyes were full of tenderness and sweetness, replied, "Simon and I knew each other when we were fifteen years old in high school. At that time, he was not living with the Chin Family. Later, after graduation from high school, I went abroad to study with him, and we were always together!"
"Four years ago, I chose to stay in Newley City, but Simon chose to go back here!"
"I told him I would go back to him in four years. At first, I thought he was angry with me and blamed me. I thought he didn't forgive me, but it turned out that he had been waiting for me all the time..."
Addy suddenly let go of Emily's hand and reached for Simon's wallet at the side.
