Cherie ran into Layla while she was out shopping at a mall two weeks later.
Hector and Layla were shopping for their wedding at the mall.
Hector was the one who came over and greeted her first, "Hey Cherie, did you come by yourself? Did Boyle not accompany you here?"
Cherie replied, "Today isn't even a weekend, so how would he even be free? Boyle isn't even on break and you're on break, Hector? Did you skip work?"
Hector had been hired to work as the finance manager for MO Group for almost a year now.
Hector chuckled as he took a glance at Layla who was nearby and said, "Aren't we getting married soon? Boyle allowed me to take a break to prepare for my wedding."
"You guys are getting married soon?"
Hector replied, "Yeah, we've been dating for half a year now and we've already met both our parents, so we're preparing for our wedding."
Layla walked over and hugged Hector's arm as she said, "Why don't we have lunch together since we've already ran into each other?"
Cherie did not refuse them since being a third wheel for Layla and Hector did not bother her at all.
Coincidentally enough, she was alone and hungry.
They picked a restaurant that served steak. Cherie had not had steak in a really long time now and she really wanted to eat it.
She ordered a medium rare steak.
Hector went to the washroom while they were waiting for their food to be served, leaving Layla and Cherie at the table.
Layla took out a wedding invitation from her bag and said, "Since we ran into each other, I'll just hand you the invitation first. Hector and I are getting married."
Layla handed the intricately designed red invitation to Cherie.
Cherie accepted the invitation and simply asked, "Do you really like Hector though?"
Layla was stunned as she did not expect Cherie to ask her that.
Cherie said, "You hesitated. You don't like him?"
Layla stared at Cherie as if she was looking at a child as she chuckled, shook her head and said, "No, I just thought that you've always been living in your own bubble and won't ever care about others. I felt a little uncomfortable when you suddenly asked me about Hector."
"Can't I ask? Hector is still Boyle's good friend and shouldn't I care about his matters?"
Layla chuckled and drank a sip of lemonade before saying, "Sure."
"You haven't answered me yet. Do you even like Hector?"
Layla stared intensely at Cherie before saying, "Oh, don't you worry. I've already lost interest in Boyle for a long time. The person that I actually love right now is none other than Hector."
Cherie pouted her lips and said, "I'm not afraid of you approaching Boyle at all. I never even thought of you as a potential competition back then. You know, I just thought that Hector is a really nice guy and if you don't exactly like him, well, that'll be really sad for him."
Layla cracked a pitiful laugh and said, "You think too highly of me. In the seven years of your break up with Boyle, Boyle had been working hard alone in New York. I travelled to New York a lot to visit him. You know, even though we weren't talking about our romantic lives, talking about work alone was enough to make me happy. I once thought that even if he was unable to forget about you temporarily, I shared so much in common with him and I had always been by his side to talk about work. Even if I was unable to be his girlfriend, a friend to him was good enough for me. I thought that he'd slowly lose interest in you after some time and might slowly develop feelings for me. However… I underestimated his obsession toward you. I found out that his venture in New York was all because of you soon after.
"Cherie, you're like a permanent tattoo in his heart. I once lowered myself so much just to go after him. I thought that if you could do it without any effort, there's no reason for me to not be able to do the same. However, I realized that the man had absolutely no feelings toward me. He'd only talk about work, the economy and the risks in the stock market whenever he was with me. Sometimes, I really wanted to talk about life with him and even if we were just talking about you, it'd be fine with me as well.
"If he mentioned you or talked about you on his own, it'd show that he already started to accept and let go of the past but he never did that.
"Cherie, I know you're a really good person. You're beautiful, you're smart and your family is really powerful. However, you have quite a poor personality. You're unruly, clingy and immature. Not to mention, you'd stir up trouble for Boyle. I've always thought that you and Boyle are not compatible. I used to think that the both of you will divorce each other not long after your marriage."
Cherie replied with a carefree tone, "But the flaws that you've mentioned were never flaws in Boyle's eyes to begin with."
"Yes, in Boyle's eyes, your arrogance, clinginess and your unruliness are all good qualities. He loves all of it. Sometimes, I comfort myself by telling myself that Boyle had poor taste and he deserves all of the struggles for choosing a woman like you."
Cherie replied, "You say that sometimes people feel like punching me with the way I say things. Honestly, the way you say things truly makes people feel like punching you too, you know."
"Have I not spoken the truth? Cherie, do you dare claim that you're not unruly, clingy or arrogant?"
Cherie replied, "Boyle told me that I can be as unruly as I want forever. He likes it when I act like a child. As for arrogance though, he was already used to it. However, as for me being clingy though, even without me being clingy to him, he would cling onto me as well."
Layla teased, "That is why I've lost. It's not because I'm not as excellent as you are, Cherie. I lost because of the way Boyle spoils you. Cherie, I truly hope that you at least feel threatened in your marriage with Boyle in the future."
Cherie replied with a carefree tone, "Well, it'll be when Boyle dies earlier than me then."
Layla thought to herself, '... you win.'
