Lucy did not expect Mr. Q would agree to donate to her school.
"Aren't you afraid that I'm a fraud?" she asked.
Lucy was very curious about Mr. Q; she wondered if he was kind-hearted or just too rich.
Mr. Q replied, "I don't do things if I have no confidence in it. Since I've agreed to donate to your school, it means that I've done my research."
Lucy was speechless. She clicked on Mr. Q's profile; it was obviously an alternate account as he had no friends or status updates. Perhaps he wanted to remain anonymous, hence the alternate account.
"Thank you; how may I address you?"
"Just Mr. Q will do."
'What a strange man,' thought Lucy.
…
She went to see the school principal. After all, she could not decide on such a huge matter.
The principal pat Luc's back as he praised her. "Lucy! Who knew that you would contribute so much to our school in such a short time? I don't even know how to thank you!"
Lucy was slightly embarrassed by that, she said meekly, "Principal, please don't say that. It is merely a coincidence. Furthermore, I cannot guarantee that Mr. Q will continue with the donation. When and if he does, you may thank me then."
"Alright! Ms. Lucy, you have helped the kids tremendously. If we do get the money, we can build a better canteen for the kids. They won't have to pack their own food or have a cold meal. They are still young; cold meals are not good for them."
"Indeed."
…
The next morning, Lucy was about to head to the classroom when she was called into the school principal's office.
The principal was extremely excited. "Ms. Lucy, do you know how much Mr. Q donated?"
"Five hundred thousand bucks?" she asked. Lucy did not put much thought into it. Schools like theirs in Peak Valley would never receive much from personal donors unless from the government or huge corporates.
The school principal showed his five fingers as he exclaimed, "Five million!"
Lucy frowned in disbelief. "Wow, that much?" Mr. Q was a generous donor.
The school principal could not hide his excitement. "It's enough to build another primary school! Ms. Lucy, I've thought about it. We shall use this money to build a canteen and a library. Then we will renovate the classrooms and help families in need."
Lucy nodded. She was even more curious about Mr. Q when she exited the school principal's office.
…
At night, when Lucy connected to the wifi in her room, she received a message from Mr. Q.
[I believe you have received the money?]
Lucy wrote. [Yes. But it was much more than I expected. Mr. Q, thank you so much. Are you sure you want nothing in return for donating to our school? Maybe let the school principal and kids thank you in person?]
Guin looked at her nails and said, "If Lucy doesn't come back, beg me, and I'll marry you."
Yanni stood up, lifted Guin, and pushed her out of his office. "Go and play somewhere else. I have a meeting."
Guin was speechless.
After Yanni chased her off, he took his phone and viewed Lucy's profile. He saw two new photos. In one, she stood in a field of the rapeseed plant, as she looked joyfully back at the camera. In another, she stood by the foot of the hill, and she held a bouquet of wildflowers in her hands. She looked demure.
Yanni noticed something about that photo. Her waist seemed to be slightly wider than before, and there was a slight bump in her stomach. However, her limbs were still slim—was she pregnant?
Yanni zoomed in on the photo to get a good look. It did seem like she was pregnant. Did the father of her child take that photo? Yanni's eyes darkened.
…
Lucy's pregnant silhouette was in Yanni's mind the entire night. He could not sleep, so he made a call.
"Dan, cancel all my meetings and activities for the week. I'm going to Peak Valley."
"Yes, Boss."
Even if he were to let her go, he still wanted to know about the father of Lucy's child and whether it was worth it for Lucy to be with the man.
She rejected his marriage proposal, and yet within a year, she had another man's child. Did that man treat her better than him? He thumped on his chest as his heart ached.
