While Aunt Yen was cleaning up the shattered glass shards from the liquor bottle downstairs, she could not help herself from telling Guin, “Miss Yellen, we have no idea just what kind of a curse Sam had placed on our master. You are so much better than Miss Joyce. Our master is just not lucky enough to be able to appreciate you. However, Miss Yellen, you need to keep fighting for it. Perhaps Miss Joyce isn’t going to return ever again and you might still have a chance.”
Guin gulped and clenched her fist as she said, “Even if Sam doesn’t return in this lifetime, I will never have that chance.”
Guin did not want to admit the fact that Verian was at least able to attract Yanni’s attention. However, she herself on the other hand, could not even get him to bat an eye at her.
It seemed like Guin was not even considered as a woman in Yanni’s heart.
…
The rain outside the window became heavier.
Yanni stumbled onto the carpet by the bed. Empty liquor bottles rolled next to his hand in the second floor bedroom.
Guin was stung by a strong scent of liquor the instant she opened the door. Yanni grunted when she approached him. He seemed a little drunk as he asked, “Why haven’t you left yet?”
“Who is going to take care of the drunk you if I leave?”
Guin immediately snatched the half empty liquor bottle from his hand and sat next to him. She chugged a full gulp of liquor down.
Since brandy was strong, it instantly stung her throat. She frowned as she snapped, “I truly can’t understand you men. Whenever you men are sad, you will drink and everytime you men are happy, you will also drink. What’s so special about this anyway? It tastes awful.”
Yanni chuckled and grabbed a brand new bottle. He spoke while staring at the flowing liquor in the bottle, “Because it has the ability to numb a human’s strongest emotions.”
“So, are you planning to stay and drink her for a lifetime if Sam never returns?”
Yanni ignored her.
“The Yanni I know isn’t like this. Yanni Quain, you get up now!”
Guin was a little furious as she stood up and forcefully pulled Yanni up. Since Yanni was a little drunk and was unable to walk straight. He was being dragged into the washroom by Guin in his half conscious state.
Guin turned the heater to its maximum setting and started splashing hot water onto Yanni’s face.
“Wake the hell up!”
Yanni reached out to wipe his soaked wet face with his hands while he stood in the same spot. Subtle anger could be seen from the bottom of his eyes.
Guin then went downstairs to get him something for his hangover. However, when she returned upstairs, she could hear vomiting sounds coming from the washroom.
Guin frantically placed the hangover remedy down and rushed into the washroom. All she could see was Yanni slouching over the toilet bowl, puking his guts out. There was blood in his vomit.
Guin panicked. It seemed bad as his gastrointestinal tract might have hemorrhaged.
“Yanni, we need to go to the hospital now! I’ll take you to the hospital!”
…
“The patient has experienced quite a serious hemorrhage in his stomach and needs to be admitted. Are you his family?”
Guin was stunned by the doctor’s question. She stuttered, “I… I’m not.”
“Then you should hurry and inform his family. Based on his current condition, he needs to be admitted more than a week in the hospital. He needs IV fluids for him to recover.”
“Alright.”
After the doctor left, Guin felt helpless in situations like these since she was completely oblivious.
She rushed to Yanni’s side and grabbed his phone. She wanted to find his family contacts. However, after searching for it for a really long time, she could not find any. It was only then she recalled that Yanni was on poor terms with his family.
Heaton asked, “What happened to Yanni?”
Guin shook her head and said, “He had too much to drink which caused his stomach to hemorrhage. However, he’ll be fine if he stays in the hospital. The only thing is… Yanni doesn’t seem fine.”
Heaton nodded and said, “Sam has just left him and it made sense for him to act this way. TO him, Sam is more important than his life.”
Guin bit her lips and said, “Uncle, I wasn’t able to contact anyone in this hospital when I sent Yanni here. However, since you’re well connected, can you inform the hospital to provide Yanni with extra care?”
Heaton gave a calm reply as he gently patted Verian’s shoulder and said, “I’ll take care of some things. Stay here with Guin and wait for me to return.”
“Alright. Go on ahead.”
After Heaton left, the atmosphere in the hallway became slightly awkward as both Verian and Guin stood around.
Ever since Verian and Guin’s relationship were completely fractured due to Yanni, they were never as close as they once were. That was made even more apparent after Verian married Heaton and had her own family and children. She had devoted most of her time and energy to Heaton and her children. Guin also did not show up to Verian’s wedding.
They were once best friends and they once agreed to attend each other’s weddings and be bridesmaids for each other’s weddings. However, now it seemed like things were no longer the same as before.
Guin smiled as she looked at her. She made the first move and explained, “I was on a vacation during your wedding and I couldn’t make it back in time. I’m really sorry. I truly… wish both you and my uncle well in my heart.”
Verian nodded and smiled as she said, “I know. I don’t blame you.”
Guin added, “I threw a fit at you previously, to the point I stopped being your friend. However, the truth is that you were never at fault. It was my lack of courage to admit it or in other words, I never wanted to admit the fact that I never once belonged in Yanni’s heart. I’ve placed all the blame of my inability to get Yanni on you. This made me feel much better about myself. I selfishly thought it was you who were snatching things away from me.”
“But Guinnie, I don’t like Yanni nor does he like me.”
“I know. Perhaps, humans are like that. When we’re unable to get something, we would never admit our shortcomings and we’ll often pin the blame on another person just to make ourselves feel better. I’m sorry, Verian. I know our friendship can never return to the way we used to but can you forgive my immaturity?”
