Verian laid in bed after she had showered. She applied a facial mask and played with her phone.
That was what Heaton saw when he walked into the room.
The man strode to the bed with his long legs. Then he sat on the bed before reaching out to take her phone from her; he tossed it to the side.
Verian removed her face mask off and asked, "Why'd you snatch my phone?"
Heaton stared at the moist on her face. "Phones emit radiation, and they’re bad for your eyes."
Verian loved to use her phone in bed. Heaton had warned her many times, but she could not get rid of the habit.
"I was playing a game with someone. It'll be rude to leave mid-game."
As she spoke, Verian crawled toward her phone. However, Heaton pulled her back and hugged her legs. "Who are you playing? Why don't you play with your husband instead?"
Verian's eyes lit up. "You’d want to play mobile games too? I'll register an account for you, and we can play together. I thought you're not into video games."
Heaton was a workaholic, so how could he possibly be interested in video games?
Heaton's eyes dimmed as he stared at her white tender skin and whispered, "I want to play with you, but I prefer games that we can play in bed."
"Ruffian!"
She blushed and crawled away from his embrace. Then she tossed a pillow at him, but he managed to catch it and threw it back at her. "Wait for me, honey. I'll take a shower and be right back."
Then he turned around and headed straight to the washroom. However, Verian suddenly jumped onto his back.
Heaton was worried that she might slip, so he immediately caught her. He said, "Madam Fudd, I didn't expect you'd be this excited?"
"You're the impatient one!" Verian snapped back at him. "Move aside. I need to wash my face. It's sticky and uncomfortable."
…
Heaton noticed that Verian was back on her mobile game when he came out of the washroom. He even heard a man's voice from the phone.
Heaton frowned. Then he got in bed and laid next to her. He glanced at her screen with his darkened eyes and asked, "Who are you playing with?"
"A few people."
"Who was the man who spoke earlier?"
Verian was stunned, but she stared at him with a funny look and said, "Are you jealous?"
The man immediately snatched her phone.
Verian said, "Heaton, don't be unreasonable!"
"Can't help it; I am always unreasonable."
Heaton had a smug look on his face. It was as if he wanted to taunt her; she could not do anything if he did not allow her access to her phone.
Verian did not know what to say to that.
She decided to ignore him and pulled the blanket over herself.
She spent a long time underneath the covers. However, Heaton also ignored her. He switched off the lights and slept with his back toward her.
After a brief moment, Verian peeked at him from the blanker. She thought he was angry, so she inched closer to him to embrace him with both arms. "Fine, I won't play with anyone else next time, but will you play with me instead?"
The man grinned in the shroud of darkness.
Heaton enjoyed it when Verian acted coquettishly with him.
Verian scoffed discreetly; she called him an unreasonable, arrogant man in her mind.
Heaton turned around and pulled her close before he cuddled against her. "Let's sleep."
"I can't sleep. Serene is back in North City, but she seems to have difficulty looking for a job. It seems like she has broken up with Dr. Jarret."
Heaton kissed her forehead and said, "Let's not meddle with other people's affairs."
One should not get involved in another's relationship issues; it was too troublesome.
"I don't, but Serene is one of my very few friends. Of course, I have to help her if she's in trouble."
Heaton did not say anything, so Verian assumed that he did not want to hear about it. She only brought it up randomly; it was not like she expected Heaton to help as Serene did not ask for such a favor.
Did he love Serene that much that he would change the pin to her birthdate?
She rushed toward his bedroom. When she was there, she could Wilson slumped by the bed, and the entire room reeked of cigarettes and alcohol. He looked like a complete mess.
"Are you reducing yourself to such a mess because of your breakup with Serene? Are you still the same person I know?"
Everyone knew that Wilson was a proud, elegant, and a severe germaphobe. He would never wear a wrinkled shirt, nor would he drink so much in the room. He would not smoke and leave cigarette butts all over the floor, either.
However, the man looked like any other man who had just gone through a breakup.
Ruby sighed and knelt beside him. "Wilson Jarret, do you think you'll die without Serene?"
Wilson's eyes were completely red due to a lack of sleep and alcohol-fueled nights.
The man stared at her with a cold, menacing gaze. "Yes. And I am divorcing you."
"What qualities do Serene have that you'd die for her?"
"She's flawless."
Then he pushed her away before he stood up to leave the room.
Ruby scoffed to herself.
She thought that Wilson would say that Serene would never compare to her. Well, it seemed like love was blind; he did not even bother to brush her off. Could she be worse than Serene?
She had known Wilson longer and had spent more time with him than she ever did. They had even been through hell together. Could Serene say the same?
Ruby gritted her teeth, stood up, and went after him. "Wilson!"
Wilson was so drunk that he had fallen on the carpet after his little spat with Ruby.
Ruby went to help him up, but she did not expect he would hug her. He mumbled drunkenly, "I'm sorry… Serene… I'm so sorry."
Serene?
Ruby glared at the intoxicated man. "Are you calling for Serene Ludd?"
