Verian shivered under the blanket and asked in a muffled voice toward the man who was sitting at the end of her bed. “Heaton, won’t you feel cold?”
“I’m not like you who always grumbles about being cold every time.”
“...”
After some time, Verian could not hold in her thoughts anymore. “Are there any heat packs? Let me use them instead.”
What if Heaton caught a cold after she placed her cold feet on his lower abdomen to warm them?
Heaton furrowed his brows slightly as he disliked her being a chatterbox and impassively retorted, “Where do I find heat packs for you in the middle of the night?”
Although Heaton’s tone was cold and aloof, Verian’s heart still felt warm. She felt this way especially because his warm and dry hands were holding onto her feet, placed on his lower abdomen. Perhaps…it would be better than using heat packs.
Beneath the blanket, Verian’s lips unconsciously curved upward in happiness. “I shall use heat packs tomorrow then!”
Heaton hummed in agreement.
Verian’s feet were soon warm and she soon fell asleep as the comfortable warmth spread to the rest of her body.
…
The next morning as Verian was still sleeping soundly, Heaton stealthily and slowly tiptoed out of bed. He then donned on a set of presentable clothes before leaving the ward.
He recalled the conversation he had with Jane yesterday when she said that James had allocated half his assets to Riana. Strangely, he had an uneasy and ominous feeling about it.
However, he was unable to articulate his feelings and explain where this uneasiness came from.
It was probably because of the strange fact that James was giving half his assets to Verian. There seemed to be no logical reason for this.
Heaton would have understood if James were to allocate half his assets to his only blood-related nephew. However, why was he giving it to Riana? He had not known Riana for long and besides, there was no blood relation between them.
Heaton made a call to James.
“Hello, Second Uncle. It’s me, Heaton…”
“Heaton, how are you and Verian faring?”
Heaton impassively answered, “Everything’s going well.”
“That’s good then. That’s good…”
“Second Uncle, why did you leave half your assets to Riana?”
Heaton did not beat around the bushes, getting straight to the point.
James was not surprised that this news had reached him. He calmly replied, “You’re aware of Janny’s temperament. I’m incredibly disappointed in Janny. Initially, I wanted to donate half my assets to charity but after further thought, I felt like it’d be a good choice to give it to Verian and you.”
Heaton frowned slightly as James’s explanation was too far-fetched.
If James really had such intention, he should have placed half his assets under Heaton’s name. Why was it under Riana’s instead?
“Second Uncle, you mentioned before that you and Riana’s mom were old buddies?”
James was temporarily stunned. He did not expect Heaton to ask him this unrelated question out of the blue. “Yeah, why?”
What kind of friendship was it that could make Second Uncle transfer half his assets to Riana?
“Nothing, I’m just curious.”
After James hung up the call, he felt uneasy.
As of now, Heaton and Verian were already married and had given birth to Little Jelly Bean, an adorable daughter. How could he have the heart to reveal the truth behind Verian’s birth? He just wanted to take this secret to his grave.
While deliberating over this, Sarah and Jane’s voices could be heard outside.
Sarah was back?
“What on earth do you want me to say?”
Sarah Zain uttered her thoughts clearly, word by word. “You’re afraid. You’re afraid that once you tell Verian the truth behind her birth, not only will she refuse to acknowledge you, but she’ll also hate you! She’s Heaton’s wife, but she is also your biological daughter. Based on the blood relationship and family hierarchy between you two, she and Heaton are patrilineal cousins. Do you think she can take it after knowing the truth?”
“Sarah Zain! What are you trying to do?”
Sarah snickered, glowered straight at his aged and weary eyes. “What am I trying to do? Don’t you cherish her more than Janny? All these years, the one you loved was always Jolin. Perhaps, I can help in reuniting both you and Jolin Lacy’s daughter.”
“Sarah! You’re insane!”
“I’m insane? You should be grateful to me for helping you acknowledge her!”
James was fuming, his heart wrenched in pain. He clutched his chest and exclaimed, “Sarah Zain! You can’t do this! Heaton is your biological nephew!”
“It is true that Heaton is my biological nephew, but I despise you and Jolin’s daughter! You and Jolin Lacy caused unhappiness in Janny’s life and mine. Because of this, I will not let your daughter live a carefree and content life! Verian is now so blessed to be together with Heaton. If she were to know the truth behind her birth, how do you think she’d react?”
The skin beneath James’s eyes trembled.
…
In the hospital, Heaton and Verian were enjoying their breakfast.
Verian kept pondering about something and said, “Heaton, I think I ought to refuse, no matter the reason behind Second Uncle giving me half his assets might be. If I were to accept it, Second Aunt will surely hold some grudges toward me.”
Heaton nodded and hummed in agreement as he helped her de-shell a herbal tea egg.
“However, I’ve deliberated over this matter for quite a while and am still unable to make sense of it. Why does Second Uncle want to leave half his assets to me? Although I feel a strange and indescribable closeness whenever I see him, I’ve only known him for a very short time. Besides, you’re Second Uncle’s biological nephew. Even if he wants to leave his assets to us, he could just leave them to you. Why is he giving them to me instead?”
“Alright, you don’t have to think about it anymore. Hurry up and eat.”
Heaton held the de-shelled herbal tea egg close to Verian’s mouth. Verian slanted her head slightly to bite two mouthfuls of the egg in his hands before continuing her congee. Heaton stared at the half-eaten herbal tea egg in his hands and naturally finished it since Verian was not going to have it anymore.
