It was always damp and rainy in England.
During lunchtime, Samuel had a small drink with Old Frank and Yanny so he could not drive. With just an umbrella, they both hopped onto the double-decker bus.
The red double-decker buses were quite a common sight on the streets of England. Between the rainfall, it was quite a picturesque scene.
There were not a lot of passengers on the double-decker bus.
Samuel and Yanny sat near the windows while looking out at the misty weather.
Samuel smiled and said, “Next time when Old Frank is around, cut me some slack and please stop labeling me as the nice guy. I have gotten used to being the nice guy and the gentleman in this life, so I would want to be a rebel on some days, and I would want to be a reckless and unrestrained assh*le of a guy.”
“Everyone wants to be a gentleman, but you... you would rather be a bastard than be a righteous and upstanding person.”
Samuel stared at her and his eyes were dawned with a faint light. “It’s a shame that you don’t like a gentleman, and you are only interested in bastards so I wanted to try being one. However, I am not him after all, so I can’t be one.”
Yanny only smiled lightly. She did not display any emotion, and she did not reply to Samuel’s words. Instead, she merely said, “I am really grateful for you. If it wasn’t for you and Cindy, I would still be in depths of trouble, being blinded by revenge, and at that time, if I was still being trapped, I would have either killed myself or killed him. I am decisive as once I hate a person, it will be hard for me to have second thoughts. If I continued staying there, I wouldn’t know how much more wrong turns I’d have to take. Fortunately, you and Cindy had plans to help me leave. You both are my life-savers, and if it wasn't for both of you, I’m afraid that I would have lost myself in the midst of all the hate.”
“It was because I am indebted to you, and I couldn’t bear to see you in so much pain. Even if you think that I am interfering too much, be it compensating or being indebted to, I just wish for you to stay alive. This would all be worth it then.”
Yanny silently smiled and said, “I am lucky to have both of you. Oh yes, it’s not convenient for me to contact Cindy, so would you please send my regards to her when you’re free?”
“Sure, but I heard that these days she’s been worn out by her paparazzi job and it seems like she has to stay up all hours just to get exclusives.”
“It’d be worth it to be able to do the things that one loves, regardless of the weariness. I still remember that when I was in high school, Cindy was always worried that I’d be left out, and she’d invite me to her house to have meals together every holiday. Her mom was good to me too and she’d always stuff me with food. At that time I used to wonder, how could my dad be this heartless to me but my best friend’s mom treated me that nicely.”
“It is his loss for not being able to appreciate you for being such a wonderful daughter.”
Yanny said, “I am really grateful to have met Old Frank. When I keep Old Frank company when he draws or writes, I feel that like I am indeed Old Frank’s daughter, Lynn. Old Frank is such an affectionate father.”
“Old Frank adores you too. This is indeed fate. Sometimes kinship is not that much of a big deal compared to the fate of being able to meet someone.”
Seated on the double-decker bus, both of them chatted away like old friends catching up after being apart for a long time. They chatted peacefully and calmly.
The bus stopped at a bus stop in the countryside.
Both Samuel and Yanny got off with their umbrellas and walked up the slope leading back to the house.
This was the countryside to the west of Oxford, Cotswold Town.
It was quiet and peaceful.
The small town was surrounded by the shallow and narrow Windrush River flowing peacefully and slowly.
Yanny had been living her days alone in the countryside of the UK, and here was where she healed herself completely.
Walking down the long, windy, wet slope, they reached the front door of the house. Yanny said, “I’ll head in now. My house is in a mess as I’ve been occupied with both my studies and work. I haven’t had the chance to clean up the mess. I’ll invite you over for a meal the next time.”
Samuel knew that it was an excuse, but he did not want to expose her. Being the gentleman that he was, he would of course respect her decision.
On New Year’s Eve, Yanny invited Old Frank and Samuel over to celebrate. Her house was decorated with colorful balloons and ribbons. It was as if they were celebrating New Year’s.
Old Frank was pleased and had a lot to drink. He congratulated Yanny on her debut film and on the recognition it had received.
Instead of wishing her the best in her career, Samuel simply wished, “I hope that you’d be happy every day.”
He then sculled the wine in his glass in one shot.
He knew best how hard Yanny had it when she was young.
These days, all he hoped for was for Yanny to live a more carefree life.
After dinner, Old Frank was sent home by his chauffeur. The warm and cozy home was left with only Yanny and Samuel.
They both sat on the thick rug while sipping wine.
The fire in the fireplace was burning warmly.
Seemingly curious, Samuel, being sober, casually asked, “Have you ever loved me?”
Yanny’s face was slightly flushed from all the drinking, and being cheekier than usual, she let out a ‘hmph’ and laughed. Staring blankly at the wine in her glass, she smiled and said, “When you left me, I thought I really did love you, but later I realized that I was just desperate for love when I was younger. I liked it more when you promised to give me a home. That promise made me think that we would last a lifetime, and all you did was leave me. You didn’t do things that hurt me, but I’ve stopped loving you then. Later I wondered, maybe I didn’t love you at all and maybe I just really liked you as a person. I admire your talent, your virtuousness, and righteousness, it was great being friends with you because you are a gentleman and you are a good friend.”
“Thus, in your heart, I have just been a good guy friend to you since the beginning? What about Shayne then? Even though he did so many things that hurt you, do you still love him?”
