Soon, it was New Year's Eve.
Joy, being alone in the city, went back to Lushway Town to spend the new year with her grandmother.
After dinner, Joy and Heather sat on an antique couch and watched the festivities on television.
It was an uneventful New Year's Eve. Joy was not in a good mood.
As Heather watched the television, she patted Joy's hand. "Are you sure that you won't return to the Jacob family, Joy?"
Joy smiled bitterly. "Are you afraid that I might starve?"
Heather felt sorry for her granddaughter. "Yes. Winson and the Jacob family might mistreat you, but at least you won't starve if you stayed in the Jacob family."
"I've already made my claims, Grandma. If I go back to the Jacob family now with my tail between my legs, Winson and the others will look down on me."
"But you're a girl all alone in the city. I won't be at ease."
Joy leaned on Heather's shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. "Don't worry, Grandma. I'll study hard, work hard, and buy a big house for you to live in."
Heather smiled happily. "I only wish that you'll be happy."
She sighed when she thought about what happened back then, patting the back of Joy's hand as she said, "I don't ask for much, Joy. I still regret the fact that your mother married that scumbag. If I had insisted on stopping the marriage, your mother might not have been so depressed, and her breast cancer wouldn't have developed so rapidly. The doctors said that there was still hope."
Joy did not wish to agitate Heather further. Lina Luke had a direct influence on Quincy's death.
Lina had gone to visit the sickly Quincy on an innocent pretense, but the reality was that she had gone there to brag and show off.
Lina's words exacerbated Quincy's condition and breast cancer was easily influenced by the patient's mood. Eventually, Quincy's depression had caused the cancer cells to spread rapidly, and she soon passed away.
Joy could never forgive Winson, Lina, and Cara, the daughter they had given birth to out of wedlock.
That would have been humiliation and betrayal to her mother.
Heather remained unconvinced. "Joy, you shouldn't find a man…who is as unreliable as your father."
"I won't, Grandma. I'd rather not marry at all than to marry a man like Winson Jacob."
After watching television for a while more, Heather became sleepy. She brushed her teeth and went to bed.
Joy lay down in the small room next door. Hearing the fireworks from outside, she could not sleep.
That was usually the case when a rural area celebrated the New Year.
Joy opened up her Messenger app and received a greeting card from Cindy.
[Happy New Year, Darling!]
Joy opened the greeting card and smiled.
[Happy New year to you too.] She replied.
…
In the Jinn family home.
After dinner with Old Master Jinn, Shayne casually browsed on his phone while leaning on the couch.
He received congratulatory messages every few minutes, including forwarded ones.
Samantha sat opposite him, sending Happy New Year messages while eating a piece of fruit. Of course, she sent her elder brother a message too, followed by the most important part.
[Where's my present, big bro?]
Shayne furrowed his brows and sent her a greeting card attached with two hundred bucks.
Samantha pouted. "What? Only two hundred bucks?"
"That's the limit for greeting cards."
"You could've transferred the cash into my account. Rodney transferred five thousand bucks to me!"
Shayne snorted coldly. "Yes, your Brother Rodney treats you the best."
Samantha bit her lip and said, "You're the only miser in this world."
Shayne did not reply. He was feeling rather frustrated.
He browsed through his Messenger app for a long time but did not see Joy send him a new year message.
'Maybe she's not short of money now after giving her so much money for cooking a month's worth of dinners.'
Samantha leaned close to him and sneaked a peek on his phone screen. "What are you thinking, big bro? Are you thinking about Joy?"
Shayne frowned. "Why should I think of her?"
'It's so obvious that your mind is wandering elsewhere,' Samantha thought.
'Never mind, big bro is a stubborn old coot.'
Samantha thought for a while and came up with a game. "Big bro, how about I start a group chat with you and Joy, then you can send out greeting cards and see which of us can snatch the money inside?"
"Have you lost your mind thinking about pocket money?" Shayne replied.
'Greeting after accepting the card?'
Shayne also discreetly sent greeting cards to everyone.
Samantha, Rodney, and Joy accepted it.
[Why did you only give me one buck, Big Bro?] Samantha asked.
[How stingy, Shayne.] Rodney commented.
Joy received thirty cents. She did not say anything.
Shayne thought to himself, 'One buck is still money, right?'
Shayne was frustrated that Joy did not say anything to her. He crossed his legs, carelessly tossing his phone aside as he rested his arms on his forehead and closed his eyes to prepare to sleep.
He could not sleep, as though there was something weighing down on his heart.
He heard a message notification.
Shayne shot a glance at it. He picked up his phone and took a look.
It was from Joy.
His expression sank before he could smile.
[Greeting you yesterday would have been too early, greeting you tomorrow would have been too crowded, greeting you the day after would have been too late. Wishing you a Happy New Year on New Year's Eve! Here's to happiness, wealth, and prosperity always!]
"…"
'Can you not waste my time with cheesy forwarded greetings?'
Eventually, Shayne nodded off to sleep. He was woken up by the fireworks at midnight. He grabbed his phone and checked the message notifications.
Joy's message suddenly appeared.
[Happy New Year, Shayne~]
It was a personal message sent at 00:00.
Shayne pushed himself up with his arm. He smiled gently and suddenly did not feel sleepy anymore.
His mood was unbelievably good.
He tapped on his phone screen with his slender finger several times and transferred ten thousand bucks.
