“Watch out!”
A figure lunged in from the side, shoving her out of the way. Eleanor stumbled forward, dropping to her knees just as a dull thud echoed behind her.
Heart pounding, she whipped around. Three yards away, where she’d been standing moments ago, Xavier lay on his side. Blood streaked along his arm, vivid against the torn sleeve of his suit jacket.
“Xavier!” Ignoring the pain in her knees, Eleanor scrambled to her feet and rushed to him.
A black sedan screeched to a halt nearby. The young driver jumped out, panic written all over his pale face. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean—” He crouched down, hands trembling, voice cracking with fear.
Xavier propped himself up with his good arm, clutching his left. He looked at Eleanor, his expression strained but steady. “Are you alright?”
Eleanor stared at the blood seeping through his ripped jacket, her heart twisting painfully. In that split second, Xavier had pushed her clear of the car, taking the full impact himself. He’d been thrown yards across the asphalt. She had no idea how badly he was hurt.
With shaking hands, she fumbled for her phone and called an ambulance, her voice wavering as she described the accident.
Xavier tried to reassure her, forcing a smile. “Don’t worry, it’s just a scrape.”
But as he shifted, pain flared across his face and he sucked in a sharp breath.
Thankfully, the hospital was close by. Within ten minutes, paramedics arrived, quickly bandaging Xavier’s wounds before whisking him away.
The driver huddled on the curb, head in his hands, still in shock. Police arrived soon after to take statements and manage the scene.
Eleanor wanted to go with Xavier, but he stopped her. He needed her to pick up Vivian.
After class, Eleanor collected the two children from school and brought them home, asking Joslyn to handle their dinner so she could head straight to the hospital.
