At that moment, all my emotions turned ice–cold. I looked Jonathan in the eyes and said, “There’s 

nothing I’m hiding from you. Everything I do happens right under your nose. What could I possibly hide?” 

Jonathan didn’t respond. He just kept staring at me with that same unreadable look. 

His grip was starting to hurt, so I shoved him. “Let go of me!” 

“Answer me–why did you forget about the tattoo?” 

His finger pressed against the mark on my shoulder, rubbing over it roughly. 

His fingertip was calloused, the texture grazing my skin in a way that sent a strange, involuntary shiver down my spine. 

I took a deep breath, and my knees nearly gave out. 

Jonathan wrapped his arm tightly around my waist, keeping me upright. “Answer me.” 

“I didn’t forget! I just didn’t want to remember!” 

I looked him straight in the eyes and raised my voice. 

“I told you already that I want a divorce. I don’t have feelings for you anymore. So, why the hell would I want to remember a tattoo like that? I’m going to get it removed anyway!” 

Before I could even finish, Jonathan bit down hard on my lip, anger flaring in his eyes. 

For the first time, I saw real rage in him, like he was ready to burn me to ashes. 1 

“Don’t you dare.” 

He finally spat the words out. 

“Why wouldn’t I dare? It’s my tattoo. I have every right to get rid of it!” I shot back. 

Jonathan didn’t answer. He just reached up and brushed his fingers slowly along the corner of my mouth. 

His expression was hard to read. He stared at me for a long moment before finally saying, “You know what, Elise? Whenever you’re lying or trying to hide something, you always raise your voice.” 

“That’s not true! You’re full of it!” 

I yelled without thinking. “Who do you think you are? Do you think you know me that well?” 

Jonathan didn’t respond. He just kept his eyes on me, and suddenly, I realized he was right.
