Chapter 143
It turned out that Jonathan didn’t want me to stand on my own.
I let out a short laugh. “Whether I’ve found my footing or not, what does that have to do with you?”
“What do you think?”
“It’s fine.” My voice turned cold. “One way or another, I will divorce you someday.”
He grabbed my chin tightly, and his eyes turned dark as they studied my face. After a long
silence, he said in a low voice, “Wasn’t what I did earlier on enough for you?”
“Enough of what?”
“I know you’ve always been bothered about the relationship between me and Alicia. I explained to everyone that she and I can only ever be like siblings. Isn’t that enough?”
I let out a dry laugh. “Wow. So now you’re throwing me scraps of pity? Am I supposed to be grateful like some pathetic beggar in love? Is that what you see me as? Someone desperate enough to accept whatever crumbs you decide to hand out?”
He didn’t say a word, but his silence was louder than anything he could’ve spoken.
I knew it. Even if he denied it, the truth was right there. He thought I was the beggar, utterly stripped of dignity, pleading for his affection.
I yanked his hand away. “If there’s nothing else, I’m leaving.”
“Where are you going?”
“Not your business.”
Frederick was probably still waiting for me. The only reason I came tonight was because he promised me a shot at making real money. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have shown up just to be the star of this humiliating circus.
It was evening now, and people were starting to eat.
She clearly wasn’t expecting me to be so aggressive. She let go instinctively, stunned, but quickly caught up again. “You’ve gone too far! Elise, this is my birthday! Why would you do this to me?”
“What exactly did I do?” I stopped in my tracks and turned to face her.
