No Escape from Love novel Chapter 29

I picked up Lila's jacket with a smile. Just as I was planning to toss it back at her, my phone rang. Looking at the screen, I saw that it was Alex.

"Who is it?" Lila looked over. The moment she saw Alex's name, she immediately turned her head toward me.

I hesitated as I met her gaze.

"Answer it," Lila urged as she nudged my arm. "Hurry up and answer."

"Forget it," I said in a heavy voice.

"How could you not answer?" Lila asked with a tone of urgency. "Alex was a big help to you this time. Think about it, would you have gotten out of it so easily if not for him?"

At that thought, I realized that I shouldn't be so hesitant. So, I pressed the button to answer the call.

But as soon as the call connected, it suddenly felt as if I had lost my voice. I couldn't form the words to speak.

The other end of the line remained silent as well.

Lila started to grow impatient at that. She waved her arms wildly as she urged me to speak.

"Hello?" I forced myself to say.

"I thought you'd gone mute." Alex shattered my composure without holding back.

I glared at Lila, who was bent over laughing. "Do you need something?"

"Can we talk in private? I'm right in front of your university." Alex's voice was as captivating as always.

I immediately stood up in shock when I heard that. "What did you say?"

After a moment of silence, Alex chose to let it slide. He asked, "How are things on your end?"

"It's all settled," I replied guiltily.

The information he provided had already been put to good use, so I supposed it counted as being settled. That was the excuse I gave myself internally.

Alex nodded. "I had someone look into Kevin. He's been involved in some activities that are in the gray areas of the law for some time now."

I nodded. I had already guessed as much.

"Basically, it's not safe for you to stay in the dormitory right now," Alex said. His eyes were focused ahead, so I couldn't read his emotions.

"If you're not willing to move back to the Hastings residence, you can stay at my place," he continued. His pace suddenly quickened. "My house should be safer than where you are now."
