I noticed quite a few people sneaking glances at me—some intentional, some not.
Whenever Alex brought a date to an event, she was bound to draw attention. I had barely sat down when a group of women from the R&D department gathered around me.
"Serena, are you here with Mr. Hastings?"
"Yeah, did you two make up?"
I was caught off guard for a moment before realizing that my colleagues had assumed I was sent to the project department back when I first joined them because I had fallen out with Alex.
I let out an awkward laugh. "Not exactly. Mr. Hastings and I just happened to come together, that's all."
"Oh, come on. His outfit matches yours."
I simply smiled without responding. I tried to dodge their questions, thinking they'd eventually lose interest and move on. But to my surprise, they were relentless, refusing to leave until they got a real answer.
I glanced over at Alex and found that he was still talking to some business partners, seemingly stuck in conversation.
Meanwhile, the questions kept coming. I lifted my glass. "I'm just following Mr. Hastings' arrangements—that's all. You guys have fun. I'm going to get some air in the garden."
With that, I took my champagne and stepped away from the crowd. Once outside, I took a deep breath, immediately feeling the air was much fresher out here.
"Even Alex has shown up at such an event… Could Lucas be here too?" The thought suddenly crossed my mind out of sheer boredom.
I glanced around and searched for any sign of Lucas.
Near the pond, a lone figure stood with his back to me. I recognized that posture and aura. A wave of unexpected joy washed over me, the kind you felt when running into an old friend in a foreign place. Without hesitation, I started walking toward him.
The guy's face stiffened with embarrassment, but he still tried to act superior.
"So, Henry did tell you the truth, yet you're still here stirring up trouble?" I let out a cold laugh. "Apologize to Luke right now."
"Who the hell are you?" The guy bristled at the demand. "Why should I apologize just because you say so?"
"Who am I?" I narrowed my eyes at him. "I'm Luke's friend, and I also happen to be one of the key figures in the partnership between the Schneider family and the Hastings family. If you don't apologize, I might just have to go to the Schneider residence myself and demand justice for him."
"You…" The guy's expression changed instantly. After a long hesitation, he finally muttered, "Sorry," to Lucas before scurrying off with his tail between his legs.
Watching him leave, I frowned slightly. "Who the hell was that? Meddling in things that are none of his business—he's got issues."
