Throughout the entire wedding, York and Claudia had no further interaction.
The celebration moved from the church to the hotel, lasting the whole day. As the banquet concluded, Peter and Darleen, showered with blessings from friends and family, boarded a helicopter for their honeymoon abroad.
York played his part perfectly, greeting guests and seeing them off as was expected of him.
At the hotel entrance, Claudia and Gideon were preparing to leave with their daughter. York stood beside his parents, making no special effort to speak with Claudia.
Just as they were about to depart, Mattie, nestled in Gideon's arms, reached out her chubby little hand toward York. "Uncle!"
York's expression softened. He walked over and pressed an exquisite gift box into Mattie's hands.
Gideon knew that a gift from York would be incredibly valuable. He glanced at Claudia.
Claudia handed the box back to York. "York, Mattie's still little. Don't spoil her like this."
York placed the box back in Mattie's hands. "It's a welcome gift from her uncle. You have to take it."
Gideon accepted it on his daughter's behalf. "On Mattie's behalf, thank you, Mr. Ferguson."
After Claudia's family of three departed, the Ferguson and Louis families saw off the last of the guests before leaving themselves.
That evening, at the Ferguson Mansion, the atmosphere was anything but joyous. On what should have been a happy day celebrating Darleen's wedding, the faces of the Ferguson family members were grimmer than ever.
Wendy, exhausted from the day's events, sank onto the sofa, too tired to speak.
Old Mr. Ferguson brought up the old topic again. "York, your sister is married now. How much longer are you going to drag this out?"
York's lips were pressed into a thin line as he silently loosened his tie on the sofa.
Infuriated by York's attitude, Old Mr. Ferguson snapped, "Claudia's child is already three, and you won't even get engaged. What exactly are you trying to do?"
York lowered his gaze, hiding the emotion in his eyes, but still refused to speak.
"In the last three years," York declared, "I've expanded the Ferguson Group's empire across the globe. I've done exactly as you asked. What more could you possibly be dissatisfied with?!"
With that, he turned and stormed out of the Ferguson Mansion.
Old Mr. Ferguson clutched his chest, nearly collapsing from the shock.
Sewell gaped, slumping back onto the sofa in disbelief.
Wendy broke down, crying as she accused her husband, "If York really never marries and never has children, what good will all our family's money and power be? Who will inherit everything? What was the point of forcing him to do all this?!"
Sewell looked around the cold, empty living room and suddenly slapped himself across the face.
An hour later, parked outside a downtown convenience store to buy cigarettes, York once again saw Claudia,Gideon and their daughter.
