Standing outside the car, Eddy asked tentatively, “York, if my sister marries someone else, will you still be part of our family?”
A flush of red instantly filled York’s eyes. He made a promise to the boy. “As long as you still see me as your brother, I will always be your family.”
Eddy looked skeptical. “But…”
But ever since his sister got together with that doctor, York hadn’t come over for a single meal.
York extended his hand out of the window. “Pinky swear.”
As a smile finally broke across Eddy’s face, York’s eyes burned crimson. He would protect them from a distance, watch them find their happiness from afar.
Only when Eddy’s figure disappeared from view did York order, “To the airport.”
Mark quickly instructed the driver. The helicopter was about to take off when his boss had suddenly delayed the departure. He thought some major crisis had occurred. He never would have guessed York had rushed over here to give a pep talk to a kid.
About ten minutes later, Eddy walked back into his house, carrying the drinks.
His father, Felix, was still fuming. “You little brat, you finally decided to come back?”
Claudia and Gideon exchanged a look. Claudia gestured for Gideon not to step forward.
Though reluctant, Eddy placed the drinks on the table. “I… I went out to buy some drinks.”
Claudia’s eyes fell on the ice pack clutched in her brother’s hand. She knew her brother. After storming out in such a rage from being slapped, there was no way he would have come back with drinks, let alone thought to get an ice pack for himself.
Claudia moved past Eddy and went to the door, but she saw no one else outside.
Gideon asked her, “What is it?”
Claudia shook her head and returned to the living room with him.
Eddy sniffled and then bowed suddenly. “Mom, Dad, I’m sorry. Claudia, I’m sorry. We have a guest, and I shouldn’t have thrown a tantrum.”
Eddy put down the components. “York said if I love you, I have to love what you love. He said I shouldn’t make you angry.”
“What else?”
“York said that doctor is really impressive, and that for your sake, I should try to get to know him. He told me to respect you and said that I’m the pillar of the family…”
Claudia left her brother’s room. She hadn't expected York to speak up for Gideon. Nor did she ever think she would hear him say something like “love what she loves.”
Passing by her parents’ room, Claudia was about to knock and talk with them for a bit, but she stopped when she heard them also talking about York.
Listening to the regret and admiration in their voices, the praise they had for him, Claudia quietly returned to her own room.
After his rebirth, York had changed so much in how he treated her family. It was only natural that they liked him more now, that they saw him in a better light. But no matter how much her family liked him or approved of him, it wouldn't sway her in the slightest.
A man is like a book. You can read it a second time and gain new insights, but you will never get a new ending.
