Seeing Darleen in the distance, Haley finally released her son.
Peter scrambled over to Darleen’s side, just in time to intercept his cousin Dailey’s wandering hand.
Dailey pushed his glasses up his nose, his voice laced with annoyance. "Peter, I thought you weren't feeling well. How did you end up coming with Darleen?"
Peter was smooth. "York had something come up, so he asked me to look after Darleen."
The explanation, however, grated on Darleen. She shot back at Dailey, "Who I came with is none of your business."
Dailey’s face fell. "Darleen, Peter's fiancée is here too. I was just worried people might get the wrong idea."
Darleen snatched her coat from Peter's arm. "Peter, you go do your thing. I'll walk around by myself."
She walked straight up to Ann. Ann recognized her instantly. Although she wasn't close with the Fergusons, she had thoroughly investigated York's family while they were dating. She’d been wondering how to get to York, and now an opportunity had just fallen into her lap.
Ann approached her proactively. "Miss Ferguson, it's been a while."
Darleen scoffed. "Ann, you've got some nerve. Scheming against my brother, blackmailing our family for sixty million, and you're already out of jail so soon?"
Darleen’s words caused a stir, and a crowd quickly gathered, whispering amongst themselves.
Ann stood before Darleen, visibly tense and uncomfortable. The matter had been resolved, yet this bitch had to bring it up in public.
Feeling a pang of guilt, Ann hastily explained, "Miss Ferguson, even if you have a problem with me, you can't spread rumors like this in front of everyone. If I had really done something wrong, do you think the police would have let me go?"
Darleen pretended to think. "Let me see, what was the name of that old man who helped you?"
