At the sound of the doorbell, the entire family fell silent.
Looking at the chaotic living room, Backus reluctantly went to open the door.
"Aunt Selene."
Seeing Selene, Backus quickly ushered her inside.
Though middle-aged, Selene was impeccably maintained and dressed elegantly.
She entered with her purse, and Fiona hastily kicked the scattered luggage against the wall.
Selene surveyed the mess in the living room and walked straight to Ann. "Ann, what happened?"
Seeing Selene, Ann burst into tears. "Aunt Selene, Fiona is trying to kick us out."
Selene took Ann's hand, her eyes filled with sympathy.
She comforted Ann, saying, "It's alright, Aunt Selene is here."
Selene turned to her sister-in-law, Laurel. "Laurel, how can you just stand by and let your son and daughter-in-law kick your own daughter out of the house? She’s your own flesh and blood."
Even now, Laurel sided with her son. "Ann, what are you talking about? It's not easy for Backus and his wife. The apartment is small, and it really can't fit two more people."
Ann looked at her mother, hurt. "Mom, Fiona was trying to kick you out just now too. Why are you still defending them?"
Laurel shot Ann a harsh glare. "Don't talk nonsense. Your sister-in-law’s bark is worse than her bite. She can't afford it, so what can she do?"
Fiona quickly chimed in, "Aunt Selene, don't listen to Ann's nonsense. Even the tongue and teeth clash sometimes. We were just having a small argument. She's my sister-in-law, and it's not easy for her raising a child alone. How could I really kick her out?"
Selene glanced at the luggage piled in the corner, her hands clenching in anger. "Ann nearly went to prison for this family! Without Ann, you would never have earned enough money to buy a house in Capital City. You people have some nerve!"
Selene continued, "I've already paid back the sixty million Ann owed the Ferguson family. My brother passed away young, and I only have this one nephew and niece. This apartment will remain Backus's; Ann won't fight you for it."
