Peter stormed out, still muttering curses.
York was speechless.
As Peter reached the door, York stood up and asked, "Has Claudia sent you any messages?"
Peter turned back and gave York a triumphant look. "She messaged me the second her plane landed. Sent a few, actually."
After Peter left, York took out his phone. Claudia hadn't called or sent him any messages.
He started to feel a gnawing anxiety. His lonely figure paced back and forth in the living room, phone clutched in his hand. After much hesitation, he sent her a message.
More than ten minutes passed. Still no reply.
York suffered in silence. After another ten-plus minutes, he mustered his courage and sent her a video call request.
Claudia, who had just stepped out of the shower, answered it without thinking. When she saw York on the screen, she greeted him calmly, "York."
On the video call, York asked if she had eaten dinner and how her accommodations were. After a few polite but distant exchanges, Claudia was ready to hang up and go to bed.
York's tone grew a bit urgent. "Remember to check the windows and doors before you go to sleep tonight," he reminded her. "Make sure to double-lock the door. And also, tomorrow—"
