Ann's head was spinning. "I told him, Fiona, but he barely spoke to me, let alone offered any compensation."
Fiona patted her chest reassuringly. "Your brother and I both heard it, so it can't be fake. That Ferguson man still has feelings for you. He canceled his wedding for you! He must have his reasons, something holding him back from getting back together with you right now. You just have to be patient."
Laurel nodded eagerly in agreement. "As they say, it's easier for a woman to win a man over. Besides, in York's eyes, you saved his life! You just need to be more proactive and go see him more often. Your two nephews' chances of a better life depend on you."
Fiona added, "Ann, you're his savior, and his grandfather tormented you into this state. If he dares to not take responsibility for you, we'll go raise hell at the Ferguson estate and at his company."
Laurel slapped her thigh. "Your sister-in-law is right! Rich people care most about their reputation. If he dares to ignore you, we'll make a scene."
Ann wiped her tears and quickly tried to calm them down. "He won't ignore me. It must be that old bastard at the Ferguson estate who's getting in the way, making York cautious about showing his feelings for me. Now that I'm back, I'll find a way to marry into the Ferguson family. When that happens, all their wealth and glory will be mine. I can give you as much as I want. I'll send my nephews to the most expensive schools and buy you all the biggest villas!"
Ann's two nephews gathered around her, clapping their hands happily and chanting, "Auntie is the best! We're going to live in a big house soon!"
Laurel and Fiona beamed, lost in the sweet fantasy of marrying into high society.
Just as the family was basking in their dreams of grandeur, a sharp knock on the door shattered the laughter.
Backus opened it to find several uniformed police officers standing there. The family's faces paled instantly at the sight of police at their door so late at night.
An officer asked formally, "Excuse me, which of you is Ms. Ann James?"
Ann stepped forward, her heart pounding. "I am."
The officer stated, "We've received a report that you are a suspect in a case of blackmail and extortion involving a large sum of money. Please come with us."
