Seeing Claudia's parents hesitate, York prompted, "I want the real answer."
Felix sighed. "York, you come from a good family and you're an outstanding young man. We've always thought very highly of you. But we spoiled Claudia. If she says she doesn't want to get married, we can't bring ourselves to force her."
Jessica added, "Claudia didn't lie to you. The explanation she gave you is the same one she gave us. Besides, it's a good thing for a young woman to have a career. She already went to Westminster General Hospital today to handle her onboarding paperwork."
York subtly lowered his gaze. Claudia had gone straight to Westminster General Hospital.
"To be honest, her father and I have our own selfish reasons too," Jessica said. "Claudia just graduated. We'd like to keep our daughter at home for a few more years."
"Uncle Felix, aunt Jessica," York promised, "if you can't bear for Claudia to leave, we can live here with the Watkins family after we're married. I'll also support her career and make sure she isn't wronged in the slightest."
York's concessions deeply moved Claudia's parents, but they wouldn't make such a critical decision for their daughter.
Felix sighed again. "York, at the end of the day, our Claudia isn't good enough for you. Let's just let fate decide."
"We appreciate the thought," Jessica said, "but you should take the jewelry back for now. Whether we accept it or not is up to Claudia."
Since Felix had put it that way, York could only nod. "In that case, I'll hold onto the set for safekeeping. Just say the word, and I can bring it back anytime."
If her parents wouldn't take the jewelry back, then Claudia certainly wouldn't. But regardless, he had to test his theory one more time.
With a heavy heart, York left the Watkins' apartment. Once in the car, he lit a cigarette.
After finishing it, he instructed the driver, "Head to the west side of the city."
An hour later, the luxury car pulled to a slow stop on the street outside Westminster General Hospital. Through the car window, York saw Claudia and her classmate, Rae Blake, walking toward him.
