The first-floor lobby.
York strode out of the elevator and went straight to Claudia. "Why didn't you message me before you came? I would have picked you up."
"Are you done with work?" Claudia asked, her tone indifferent.
York nodded, his gaze falling to her untied shoelace.
With a natural motion, he knelt to tie it for her.
Employees passing through the lobby cast envious glances their way. Some even sneakily snapped photos to share in their private chats.
Claudia stood still, looking down at York as he focused on tying her shoe. Slowly, the image began to overlap with another one sealed away in her memory.
In her past life, York had knelt just like this in front of Ann, gently helping her try on shoes.
The memory sent a wave of revulsion through her, and she instinctively pulled her foot back.
York looked up. "What's wrong?"
"How could I trouble Mr. Ferguson with something like this? I can do it myself."
Claudia turned to the side and crouched down to tie the lace herself.
York slowly rose to his feet, his deep eyes fixed on her reaction. His gentle expression grew cautious.
They left the company together and went to a restaurant Claudia had chosen beforehand. She had picked a quiet corner.
She let York order. "It's my treat tonight. Order whatever you want."
York told her he had a card for the restaurant and that she didn't need to pay. When the restaurant first opened, the owner had pulled some strings to get him a VIP card with a million-dollar credit.
York ordered two steak dinners and a separate matcha truffle for Claudia.
After the waiter served their food and left, York thoughtfully cut Claudia's steak for her and swapped their plates.
Seeing that Claudia hadn't spoken for a while, he couldn't help but ask, "Why the sudden invitation to dinner today?"
His tone was clearly probing, his every glance and movement exceptionally careful.
