A few minutes later, they were in the cramped front seat of the car.

York gripped Claudia’s hands, examining the cuts on her arms. His voice and his eyes were filled with undisguised pain. “You hurt yourself like this just to avoid causing trouble for Gideon. Why didn’t you come to me when you were in trouble?”

He challenged her, “In your heart, have I really lost all of your trust?”

Claudia forcefully pulled her hands away.

She reached for the door’s unlock button on the center console, but York easily blocked her.

A sweat broke out on her brow. “York, what in the world are you doing?”

His dark eyes were fixed on her expression. “First, I’m taking you to the hospital to get those cuts cleaned. Then, we’ll get the dress dry-cleaned, and I’ll go with you to return it to Hugh.”

Before Claudia could protest, he added, “Or, you can keep the dress, and I’ll go with you to give Hugh the thirty million.”

From the passenger seat, Claudia yelled in frustration, “York, you have no right to interfere in my private life! If you don’t stop, I’m calling the police!”

As she said it, she reached into her purse for her phone.

York’s long arm shot out and snatched it away.

Driven to her wit’s end, she lunged across the console into the driver’s seat, trying to grab the phone back.

In the struggle, York pushed her down, and she ended up straddling his lap. They were face to face, the position intimate and humiliating.

Claudia struggled to get up, but York’s arms held her fast.

Looking down at her, York’s Adam’s apple bobbed. “Claudia, I don’t want to fight with you. Just be good. I’ll take you to the hospital to treat your arm, and then we’ll go talk to Hugh and clear things up.”

Claudia held up her arm. “York, I hurt my own arm. It has nothing to do with you. And my business with Hugh is none of your concern.”

York’s eyes flickered. “This morning, I collapsed in the supermarket from stomach pain, and you could walk away without a second thought. But when you’re hurt, I can’t just ignore it.”

Claudia suddenly lowered her head and laughed.
