York grabbed the umbrella and got out of the car without a second thought.
Inside the supermarket, Claudia was in the aisle with paper products when she ran into an old classmate and her boyfriend, who were picking out sanitary pads.
Seeing how affectionate they were, Claudia chose not to disturb them.
"Have you ever bought this stuff for another girl before?" the classmate asked her boyfriend.
The boyfriend immediately declared his loyalty. "Honey, what are you talking about? This is private stuff. A man only buys this for his wife!"
Seeing the blissful smile on her classmate's face, Claudia quietly looked away.
That was how a couple should be.
Not far away, York watched her reaction, his grip on the umbrella tightening unconsciously.
He stood frozen, his feet feeling as heavy as lead, unable to take another step closer to her.
When two young women passed him, York stopped them and asked if they could do him a favor and give the umbrella to Claudia.
He watched as they handed her the umbrella, saw them point in his direction, and saw Claudia turn to look his way. York instinctively ducked behind a shelf.
He remembered the time in the department store when Claudia had caught him buying pads for Ann.
He remembered the look in her eyes.
York felt as if his heart was being carved out, the pain leaving him weak.
Claudia had been married to him for three years, and he had never once asked if she had cramps during her period. He had never personally bought these things for her.
…
Exposed, Celia grew flustered and angry.
Her words turned harsh and aggressive.
"Claudia, you're just a bankrupt heiress," Celia sneered. "Without York, you're nothing. What gives you the right to be so arrogant?"
She looked down her nose at Claudia. "To me, crushing a commoner like you would be as easy as stepping on an ant. The fact that I'm even bothering to talk to you is a kindness. Don't be ungrateful!"
Claudia calmly turned up the volume on her phone.
"Celia," she said, "at the end of the day, you're just the illegitimate daughter of the Shaw family. Since you can't bring them any benefits, you should keep a low profile and stop causing trouble for your elders."
Celia laughed, her arrogance boundless. "Those old fossils from the Shaw family already have one foot in the grave. Don't you dare use them to threaten me!"
Claudia raised her phone. "Old Mrs. Shaw," she said calmly, "your granddaughter is quite spirited. I wonder where she gets her confidence from?"
