Ann's sister-in-law added, "Exactly! Ann graduated from a prestigious arts academy. She was a dance major, so she has such incredible grace."
Seeing the tension, the crowd fell silent.
Sensing the awkward atmosphere, Celia quickly stepped in. "Mr. Ferguson, I wonder what precious gift you've prepared for Ann today. Could you show it to us? We're all dying to see."
Immediately, a chorus of agreement rose from the crowd.
Ann glanced at York, who stood beside her without any reaction, his expression unreadable.
She couldn't help but shoot another look at Claudia.
Then, in a deliberately sweet, pleading voice, she said, "York, didn't you say you had an unforgettable birthday present for me? Since everyone's so curious, why don't you show it to them? Please?"
Peter couldn't suppress a grin. "York, since Miss James is so eager, don't keep us in suspense. Go on, show everyone the gift you got for her."
Six, with his handsome, mixed-heritage features, scanned the room, his deep brown eyes taking everything in like radar.
He tugged on Claudia's arm. "Claudia, something feels off about Mr. Ferguson, doesn't it?"
Claudia patted his arm until he let go. "Let's just watch the show. No need to speculate."
Six nodded obediently and shut his mouth.
Just then, Mark made his way through the crowd to York's side.
The two men exchanged a look, and Mark stepped back.
York pulled out a voice recorder and placed it on the long table with the cake and champagne tower.
"The gift I got you is on this recorder," York said. "Why don't you play it and have a listen?"
Peter chimed in, goading her, "Ann, York said everything you want is on there. What are you waiting for?"
Ann's sister-in-law pushed through the crowd. "Ann, what are you worried about?" she said for all to hear. "Since everyone wants to hear it, just be brave and play it for them."
Darleen couldn't stand it anymore and piped up, "Ann, even your family is telling you to hurry up. Who knows? Maybe my brother has a unique way of proposing to you."
Celia walked over to Ann's side and coaxed her, "Ann, Miss Ferguson is right. Maybe Mr. Ferguson is just being creative and wants to propose this way. Hurry up and play the recorder so we can all be jealous!"
The worry in Ann's eyes slowly gave way to excitement.
Other than a marriage proposal, she couldn't imagine any other reason why York would give her a voice recorder in front of everyone at her birthday party.
Ann shot Claudia a defiant look, then, in front of the entire crowd, she pressed play on the recorder.
