York and Claudia got divorced, keeping it a secret from everyone.
Peter and Rock Sayer were in the know, but since neither York nor Claudia had made a public announcement, they didn't dare ask too many questions.
On Tuesday evening, York returned to Ferguson Manor after work.
The family had just finished dinner, and his sudden appearance was a surprise to everyone.
Sewell Ferguson said, "Now that you two have decided to make things work, you should have her accompany you to more business galas. Clear up all those rumors circulating outside."
Sewell continued, "And if she wants to remain the Young Lady of the Ferguson family, she needs to give you a child soon."
York didn't say a word. He simply placed the divorce certificate he'd brought with him on the coffee table.
"Dad, Mom, Grandpa," he announced, "Claudia and I are divorced."
The moment the words left his mouth, the atmosphere in the room shifted.
Darleen quickly snatched up the certificate.
Seeing the photo of her brother and Claudia on the divorce document, her eyes turned red.
Darleen handed the certificate to her parents.
Wendy glanced at it briefly before looking away.
Old Mr. Ferguson remained silent in his seat.
Sewell scoffed, "How much of your fortune did that woman take?"
York lowered his gaze, hiding the emotion in his eyes. "She didn't take anything."
Sewell snorted and slammed the certificate back on the table. "At least she knows her place!"
Old Mr. Ferguson spoke up, his expression unchanged. "A bankrupt heiress, stubborn and unmanageable, and with no children. It's for the best this way."
York rose wearily. "I just came to let you know. I'm heading back now."
He turned and walked out of the living room.
—
Late that night, in a private room on the second floor of The Imperial Club.
Peter and York each occupied a long sofa.
"Why did you suddenly agree to the divorce?" Peter asked. "Was it because of what you heard Claudia say that night?"
York, dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, looked unwell.
He stared down at the red wine in his glass, not answering Peter's question.
What Claudia had said that night had indeed given him a lot to think about.
In her eyes, he was a terrible husband. He had neglected her too much, owed her too much.
He wanted to sort out the mess he was in as quickly as possible and start over with her.
