Monday morning. York had just finished his meeting and returned to his office when Mark knocked and entered, his face grim.
"Mr. Ferguson, Miss James is on a rooftop with her son, threatening to jump. The fire department is on the scene, and they're asking if you could come and talk her down."
York leaned back in his office chair and fell silent. Mark continued, "Mr. Ferguson, Miss James is desperate enough to attempt suicide with her child, yet she still won't contact the boy's biological father. Could it be that he doesn't exist? Or maybe he's already dead?"
York rose slowly. "Go to the scene now."
Mark's face soured. "But Mr. Ferguson, she wants to see you. I'm afraid I won't be able to persuade her."
"Call me when you get there," York instructed.
Mark gritted his teeth, knowing he had no choice but to bite the bullet.
Near noon, Mark brought Ann and her son to the apartment York had arranged for them. When Ann saw York waiting for her, she burst into tears of relief and lunged toward him. York sidestepped, and she stumbled, stopping in her tracks.
York pointed at Mark's face. "Why are you wearing a mask in the middle of the day?"
Mark removed his mask, revealing a face covered in scratches. York frowned. "...."
"I went to the scene to talk Miss James down as you ordered, and I ran into my wife, my sister-in-law, and my mother-in-law..."
York hesitated for a moment. "I'll see what I can do."
A smile finally appeared on Ann's face. As he was leaving, York offered her some reassurance. "I've been busy lately and have neglected you and your son. Rest well and don't overthink things. Once I'm through this busy period, I'll make proper arrangements for you both."
After York left, Ann slowly got up from the floor. She knew it. Even if York didn't want a divorce, he would never abandon her and their son.
York left Ann's apartment and went to Ferguson Manor. The moment he sat down, Sewell and Wendy began pressuring him to divorce Claudia.
Wendy said, "York, your divorce from Claudia has wide-ranging implications. Mr. Cyrus is not backing down, and you know how formidable Mr. Grant's legal team is. It won't be long before you receive a court summons. The board is demanding a public statement. you need to consider this very carefully!"
