After two courses of treatment, Cyrus's physical condition had improved significantly.
Although he could only stand on his own for a little over a minute, it was a remarkable improvement from before.
As his body healed, his temper seemed to have mellowed as well.
Once Cyrus was settled back in his wheelchair, Claudia said, "Mr. Grant, I'm moving into my new place next week. Want to come over and play cards?"
Cyrus shot her a sidelong glance. "As expected. You're terrible at it, but you love to play."
Claudia rubbed her hands together awkwardly.
On the weekend, worried about catering to her high-profile guests, Claudia hired a private chef to prepare a multi-course meal.
Peter and Darleen arrived a little early to help out.
Claudia was arranging fruit in the living room when Hugh arrived with his son.
As soon as Hawley Ferguson saw Claudia, he let go of Hugh's hand and threw himself into her arms. "Mommy!"
That single word plunged the room into a strange, awkward silence.
Peter and Darleen exchanged wide-eyed glances.
Eddy was so shocked the apple he was eating fell from his mouth. "Sis, where… where did he come from?"
Claudia's parents were equally stunned.
Their daughter had just had a miscarriage and wasn't even divorced yet, and suddenly she had a child?
Hugh, noticing everyone's horrified expressions, smoothed his suit jacket and addressed Claudia's parents. "My apologies, sir, ma'am. My son has taken Dr. Watkins as his godmother."
"Ohhh…"
A collective sigh of relief filled the room.
"Hawley," Hugh prompted his son, "say hello to Grandma and Grandpa."
Hugh coached him, and Hawley politely repeated each greeting:
"Hello, Grandma. Hello, Grandpa."
"Hello, Uncle."
Claudia took out her phone and started a video call with Rock Sayer.
When Rock saw the lively dinner table with only him missing, he shot up from his bed. "May you all get food poisoning for eating without me!"
Claudia propped her phone up on a stand. "We'll eat, you can chat."
During the meal, as glasses were raised and toasts were made, Rock suddenly blurted out, "Claudia, York took that ugly woman to Europe for a honeymoon, and you still haven't divorced him? Are you saving him for New Year's?"
Rock's question instantly froze the entire table.
Claudia glanced awkwardly at her parents, then at her other guests.
She put down her fork. "It's not that I don't want to. It's York. He refuses to divorce me, no matter what."
The atmosphere grew even more strangely quiet.
Even on the video call, Rock was silent.
Now, Claudia felt even more embarrassed.
She cleared her throat and said, half-jokingly, "Whoever can help me get this divorce finalized, I'll give you the seat of honor at my divorce party."
