Late that night, in a private room on the second floor of The Imperial Club.
York sat on the sofa, his expression terrifyingly grim.
Mark reported, "Mr. Ferguson, last night, Miss Hawk transferred five hundred thousand to Miss James's account. Miss James is currently staying in a hotel with her son."
York's long, well-defined fingers tapped lightly on his glass. "Prepare an apartment. Install surveillance everywhere."
Mark voiced his concern. "Mr. Ferguson, if you get close to Miss James again to investigate Thorne's death, your wife is bound to misunderstand."
York closed his eyes wearily. "We may have shared the same roots but had different fates, but he was still my brother. I can't let him rest in peace without justice."
As for Claudia... he was already rotten in her eyes. Telling her would only add to her troubles. Thorne's death had been hard on his own mother, too. If she found out he was still investigating the old case, she would surely overthink things.
He decided it was better this way. He would bear it all alone, the good and the bad. As long as Claudia didn't mention divorce, as long as she didn't leave their home, he would let her do as she pleased, let her punish him however she saw fit.
York's mind was in turmoil. He changed the subject, instructing Mark, "Follow up on the merger of the two sub-teams in the tech department tomorrow. Promote Emma Shepherd to team leader."
Mark questioned the decision. "Mr. Ferguson, Emma has been a full-time employee for less than a year. After the merger, the R&D team will have over a hundred people. Can a young woman like her handle it?"
York sent Mark a photo on his phone. "The man in this picture is Emma's father, a core engineer for Rhoderia's AI chip technology. His contract with his current company expires in a week. Have HR draw up an appointment letter tomorrow. In three days, have VP Shepherd accompany Emma to Rhoderia to pick him up. I want him hired back to our company, at any cost."
Understanding dawned on Mark's face, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration. So that's why, among all the interns, the CEO had specifically chosen Emma. His real target was her father, Jameson Shepherd, a top AI chip engineer at Rhoderia.
Celia said impatiently, "Whatever. You said you only needed the money for one night. I'll give you a few more days, but you'd better pay me back soon."
Celia had just left when Ann's phone rang. She answered it and rushed out of the hotel.
Outside a small restaurant in Southside, Laurel and Ann's brother and sister-in-law blocked her path.
"Ann, how did you get into so much debt?" Laurel demanded.
Ann's sister-in-law grabbed her purse strap and started yelling like a shrew. "Ann, you were so set on social climbing that we spent all our money on you! Then you disappeared abroad for six years while we took care of your mother! Now you're barely back and you've already racked up a huge debt, dragging us down with you!"
