Claudia pulled her hand free. "York, have you forgotten I'm a doctor?" she said, her expression perfectly earnest.
Their eyes met. He couldn't detect anything unusual in her expression.
Right in front of him, Claudia put all the pills in her mouth, took a large gulp of water, and swallowed them. She set the glass down and met his deep, complicated gaze. "It's just a minor cold. I'll be fine after some medicine. You don't need to be so tense."
With that, she turned and went into the bedroom, gently closing the door behind her. After waiting a few seconds, she cracked it open just enough to see.
From a distance, she watched as York took the blood report from her purse. Her breath caught in her throat. She knew it. The man was a schemer through and through; he wouldn't just take her word for it that she had a cold.
Thank God she had come fully prepared.
Claudia slipped into the ensuite bathroom and locked the door. She took an unopened package of sanitary pads from a drawer, tore it open, and pulled a small vial from her pocket.
An hour or so later, after showering and drying her hair, Claudia emerged from the bathroom to find York making the bed.
She walked to the bedside, picked up her pillow, and turned to leave, but York blocked her way. He took the pillow from her arms.
"I had the bed in the spare room removed," he said in a low voice.
They stared at each other, the air thick with tension. After a long moment, York's tone became conciliatory. "Even if you can't forgive me right now, we are still married. And married couples don't sleep in separate rooms."
He added, "I promise I won't touch you until you've forgiven me. But sleeping separately? Don't even think about it."
Realizing he meant it, Claudia stopped struggling. She knew that when York dug in like this, pushing back would get her nowhere. Her expression cold, she climbed into bed.
York went to take a shower. A little over ten minutes later, the mattress dipped behind her. Feeling him get closer, Claudia closed her eyes and waited silently. He must have seen what she had 'arranged' in the bathroom. If she was right, he would want to confirm for himself whether or not she was actually on her period.
