York stepped in front of Claudia.
"Are you genuinely trying to help her?" he asked.
Claudia met his gaze, her eyes cold and clear.
"York," she said, "neither of you is worth my time for revenge."
The ice in her eyes startled York, yet he forced his anger down.Claudia gave Peter a look, who then signaled to Rock.
"Doctor performing first aid! Everyone back up, give her some space!"
The two of them shooed the crowd back like a flock of chickens.
Claudia knelt beside Laurel and pulled a small black hair clip from her hair.
She leaned in and whispered to Laurel, "Your daughter stole my husband, ruined my family, and now she's trying to slander me in public."
"I've waited a long time for this day," Claudia continued, her voice low. "I guarantee that when I stick this in you, you'll be paralyzed. You'll spend the rest of your life in a hospital bed."
"Don't you dare blame me. Blame your wonderful daughter for being the other woman."
With that, Claudia pressed the tip of the hair clip firmly against Laurel's carotid artery.
"She's trying to kill me!"
Laurel shrieked reflexively, scrambling away and crawling toward the crowd for safety.
The onlookers, witnessing this, immediately began praising Claudia's incredible medical skills.
Ann shot a nervous glance at York and forced a smile. "That's wonderful! My mother is finally awake."
York's complex gaze was fixed on Claudia. He walked over to her. "Since she's fine now, I'll take you back to the hospital."
Claudia held out her hand, palm up.
York's eyes fell to the small black hair clip in her palm, his expression flickering.
York felt as if all the air had been sucked from his lungs. He wanted to move closer to Claudia, but he couldn't even find the strength to lift his foot.
Claudia looked him straight in the eye. "Don't you forget, York. My lifelong dream was to play the violin. It was only because you suffered from insomnia that I gave up my spot at the conservatory and went to medical school."
"Anyone in the world can question me," she said, her voice cutting, "but not you, York. You don't have the right!"
With that, she turned and walked away.
"Claudia!" York watched her frail, resolute figure retreat, a dull ache spreading through his chest.
Just then, the ambulance arrived.
Ann shot Laurel a look, and Laurel promptly collapsed to the ground, gasping for air.
Ann quickly directed the paramedics to put her mother on the stretcher.
She then blocked Claudia's path, saying with false sincerity, "Mrs. Ferguson, I apologize for what I said earlier. I was just so worried when my mother collapsed. Please don't take it to heart."
