Claudia had expected an argument, but to her surprise, York readily agreed to let her attend the dinner with her colleagues.
His only condition was that he drive her there.
York pulled up to the hotel entrance and got out to open her door.
He took her hand, his eyes warm. "Have a good time. I'll come pick you up later."
They looked at each other.
Claudia thought he had been acting incredibly strange the past couple of days. She figured the pressure from his family regarding Ann was getting to him, making him act erratically.
Hearing her colleagues catcalling from behind her, Claudia subtly pulled her hand away. "Drive safe."
York waited until she had joined her colleagues and entered the restaurant before getting back in his car and leaving.
To any casual observer, they looked nothing less like a couple heading for divorce.
Inside the private dining room, one of the female doctors started gossiping. "I'm telling you all, Director Watkins's husband is tall, handsome, and so stylish. He's better looking than any movie star."
Mira, her assistant, sighed dreamily. "We saw him too! The way he spoke to Director Watkins was so gentle, and his voice was amazing."
Across the table, Claudia and Gideon exchanged a wry glance.
Who would have guessed that this perfect man, so devoted to his wife in everyone's eyes, was actually a cheater who had betrayed his marriage for another woman?
As they took their seats, a colleague poured Claudia a glass of wine, and she didn't refuse.
With Gideon there, she felt at ease. Chatting about work with people who shared her passion made her happy.
Later in the evening, Claudia excused herself to go to the restroom.
On her way out, she ran into Ann and Celia.
York's sudden confrontation had terrified her. If she hadn't sworn on her son's life, she knew his ruthless nature would not have let her off so easily. He had made it clear that he claimed the child only for their safety.
She was completely at his mercy. Until the divorce was final, she couldn't afford to show her hand.
She had to know if Claudia's offer was genuine.
Ann's question caught Claudia off guard.
She hesitated for a moment. "Just be patient. We need to wait for the right opportunity."
Ann's patience was wearing thin. "Mrs. Ferguson, you don't have to string me along."
Her tone shifted as she tested the waters. "Yesterday afternoon, York came to my place. He said he wanted to spend the night to be with me and our son. It took a lot of effort to convince him to go home. I genuinely want us to get along. If you can't bear to divorce him, I don't mind continuing on like this."
Claudia stared at Ann, her expression unreadable.
