He strode forward, grabbed her arm, and roared, "Get up!"
Claudia twisted her hand to grip his. "York, kneel with me and beg Grandfather. I'm sure he'll grant you his blessing!"
They stared at each other, and a sharp pain shot through York's chest.
Wendy's eyes darted between York, Ann, and Claudia. She walked over and pushed York away.
"Dad," she said to the patriarch, "since York and Miss James are truly in love and have a child, let's not force the issue any longer. For the child's sake, give Miss James a chance. Let York and Claudia get a divorce."
Claudia shot Wendy a grateful look.
"Mom, what are you doing?" York demanded of his own mother.
Wendy turned to him. "I'm trying to help your little family of three be together."
York stumbled back. Ann rushed to his side to support him. She couldn't believe her ears; Wendy had suddenly changed her mind and was helping her. Sneaking a look at York's expression, she excitedly thanked Wendy. "Thank you, Mrs. Ferguson, for your kindness. But I come from a humble background and I'm not worthy of York. All I want is for my son and me to be safe. I would never dare to ask for anything more."
Peter, who had been silent until now, chimed in. "Miss James, don't say that. You were York's first love. Even after all these years, even after he got married, you're the only one he's ever thought about, the only one he's ever loved. He's waited so long for you and your son to come back. You should grant him this one wish and marry him."
"Peter, shut your mouth!"
Peter pulled her aside. "I have to go take care of something. Keep an eye on things." He shot a look at York, then walked out of the mansion while taking a call.
York leaned on the arm of the sofa, his own arm trembling slightly. He looked at Claudia, a flicker of panic in his eyes, his voice unsteady. "I am not getting a divorce. Absolutely not!"
At his words, the hopeful expression on Ann's face slowly froze. Even now, at a time like this, York still refused to divorce. After six years apart, he must have fallen in love with that bitch Claudia. He couldn't bear to let her go, and he didn't dare. He was afraid of losing her, so he wouldn't even consider it.
Sewell looked at Old Mr. Ferguson. "Dad, what are your thoughts on this matter?"
Old Mr. Ferguson, who had been silent for some time, let out a sigh. He looked at York and said, "Since your mind is made up, I will give you one chance, for the sake of the child. Ann and her son, or Claudia. Choose one, and forsake the other."
