A little over ten minutes later, on the street outside the hotel.
Ann stared at the row of black luxury cars and bodyguards, clutching York's sleeve in fear. "York, can I ride with you?"
Claudia glanced at the inseparable pair and turned to leave.
Darleen took Claudia's arm and led her toward a car further back. "Claudia, you can ride with me."
York subtly pushed Ann away and took a few steps forward, grabbing Claudia's wrist.
Seeing this, Ann's heart sank even further.
She walked up to them, her tone probing. "York, I need to talk to you. Can we speak in private for a moment?"
That old bastard from the Ferguson family was cruel and vicious. He had specifically summoned her tonight, and she knew it couldn't be for anything good.
But maybe it was better if things blew up.
Everyone knew about her and York now. With him to protect her, she'd like to see what those old monsters could do to her.
York glanced at Claudia, then said to Ann, "Don't worry, I'm here."
The butler opened the door to a car behind them. "Miss James, please get in."
Ann had no choice but to brace herself and get into the car.
Darleen scoffed. "Bitch. Let's see how my grandpa deals with you." She shot a defiant look at York. "Don't you glare at me. My mom told me to slap you senseless. I'll keep the rest of the slaps on a tab for later."
Claudia met his gaze calmly. With a seriousness he'd never seen from her, she said, "I'm helping you."
York's face slowly turned cold. He squeezed her hand, his grip tightening. "She just said it out of habit, Ann didn't have time to correct herself. She wasn't trying to provoke you."
Claudia forcefully pulled her hand away. "If it's such a habit, then don't bother changing it. And you don't have to make excuses for her. I'm just a convenient cover for you two. I know my place."
York's expression was terrifyingly dark. His eyes remained locked on her. "Claudia, if that's what you want to think, then fine."
Faced with his refusal to explain, Claudia remained composed. She looked him in the eye and said earnestly, "I'm truly moved by your epic love story with Ann. I genuinely want to help you make it a reality."
Their gazes held. In the tight confines of the backseat, the very air turned stifling.
Something heavy settled in York's chest, making it hard to breathe. His chest heaved, and a dangerous, unapproachable aura emanated from him.
