Claudia ignored his question. "There's a private orthopedic clinic downstairs. I'll take you to get an X-ray and have it set."
What York had done to her and her family, the wounds and the shame, were branded into their history. There would be no moving on. Not ever.
An hour later, Claudia and York left the clinic.
Claudia urged York to return to the Ferguson Mansion.
His face darkened. "Claudia, we're husband and wife. How am I supposed to face my family if we spend a holiday like this apart?"
Claudia wanted to argue, but she held her tongue and brought him back to her parents' house.
To ensure a peaceful holiday, the Watkins family deliberately avoided any unpleasant topics.
The family dinner went smoothly enough.
It was past eight in the evening when Claudia and York finally left.
On the sidewalk outside the residential complex, York took Claudia's hand.
"The issue between Eddy and me is settled, and I've given you the jewelry," he said. "Can we please put the past behind us and start fresh?"
Claudia gave a dismissive nod. "Fine."
What was past, and what wasn't, would all eventually pass.
She just wouldn't let herself be consumed by anyone or anything ever again.
She wanted to live brightly, to thrive.
York's gaze softened as he looked at her. "We just ate. How about a walk?"
Claudia hesitated for a moment before nodding.
York held her hand as they walked side-by-side down the sidewalk.
Tall and slender, he wore a dark suit under a long black overcoat, looking both distinguished and handsome.
York calmly set Claudia down.
Ann hurried over and slapped Ethan lightly on the bottom twice. "You little rascal, how many times has Mommy told you?Do not to call him Daddy."
"Daddy, I don't wanna go home with Mommy! I want you to set off fireworks with me!" Ethan wailed, clinging to York's leg.
When York didn't pick him up, Ethan turned and scrambled into the Bentley.
Ann feigned helplessness. "York, I'm not strong enough. Could you please get him out of there?"
As she spoke, she secretly watched Claudia's reaction.
York had already acknowledged his paternity to the Ferguson elders. He had promised her he would never reveal the boy's true identity to anyone. Now, with her son calling him 'Daddy' right in front of this woman, he had no choice but to play along.
York's complex gaze was fixed on Claudia's expression.
"I'll call you a car," he said. "Go home and get some rest."
