As soon as the words left York's mouth, the sudden clatter of silverware hitting plates echoed through the dining room.
Eddy shot up from his chair, glaring at York as if he were the enemy. "Who the hell wants to eat with you!"
Felix stopped his son, his voice a sharp reprimand. "Eddy!"
Eddy stormed over to the sofa and sat down, fuming.
Unfazed, York opened the food container and placed a nourishing broth in front of Jessica. "Mom, I had the kitchen make this for you. Please, try some."
Jessica stared at the broth, her lips twitching into a forced smile. "How thoughtful of you."
York pulled Claudia down to sit beside him. "Mom, there's no need to be so polite. We're all family."
Claudia knew York had come today to test her family's attitude.
If she stayed, her parents wouldn't be able to eat another bite.
Grabbing her purse, Claudia stood up. "I need to run to the store. Can you give me a ride?"
York glanced at her, then rose to his feet.
In front of her parents, he casually draped an arm around her shoulder.
"Dad, Mom, Claudia and I will be heading out now," he said to them.
Before leaving, he didn't forget to address Eddy. "Eddy, you're on break for a few days. Less time on your phone, more time taking care of your mom. Let Dad get some rest."
Seeing the suppressed anger on her family's faces, Claudia pulled away from York's arm and walked out of the room first.
York was a master of keeping up appearances.
She was no match for him.
At the hospital entrance, Claudia was about to get into the car when she received a call from Gideon.
Hearing his concerned voice warmed her heart. "Thank you, Gideon. My mom's awake now."
York stood beside her, his gaze fixed on her expression.
He had given up so much, bent his principles, all for her. And for what? A stranger's casual pity could move her to tears, while his devotion seemed to leave her utterly unmoved.
She was the one who had been blind to it all.
She had ruined herself and dragged her family down with her.
The rest of the drive was silent.
Over an hour later, the black luxury car slowly pulled into the Ferguson Mansion driveway.
Darleen opened the car door, and Claudia got out.
"Claudia," Darleen's voice caught with emotion as she hugged her, her nose stinging with unshed tears.
York got out of the car, walked over, and draped his coat over Claudia's shoulders.
Without giving her a chance to refuse, he took her hand and led her toward the living room.
Claudia knew he was doing it on purpose.
He wanted all the Ferguson elders to see that even with his infidelity and illegitimate child, his marriage was stable, and the family's reputation and the Ferguson Group's future were secure.
