York raised his eyes to look at Claudia.
Neither of them spoke. They held each other's gaze for a moment before looking away and walking toward their respective waiting rooms.
Claudia pushed open the door to waiting room.
Attorney Chase was making final preparations for the hearing.
She had the evidence of York's affair, and York himself had shown up on time. She was confident she would win the case.
A wave of relief washed over Claudia at the thought of finally being free.
Attorney Chase reminded her, "We'll have to turn off our phones before the hearing begins. Miss Watkins, is there anything else you need to add?"
Before she could finish, there was a knock on the door.
Claudia and Attorney Chase exchanged a look as Mark entered with two police officers.
"Assistant Mark," Claudia said, "is something wrong?"
Mark stood respectfully before her. "Mrs. Ferguson, the police are here to see you."
One of the officers stepped forward and presented an arrest warrant. "Ms. Claudia Watkins, our investigation has found you are a suspect in the theft of confidential corporate documents, which has resulted in significant losses for the company. You are being placed under criminal detention. Please come with us."
Claudia's mind went blank, and the color drained from her face.
She swayed violently, steadying herself by gripping the edge of the table.
Mark explained, "Ma'am, it was your cousin, Mr. Lanny Watkins, who implicated you. He claims you instructed him to steal the confidential files from my phone and leak them to a rival company."
Claudia stood frozen in disbelief, her thoughts a chaotic mess.
"I reported it to the police as soon as it happened," Mark continued. "There must be some misunderstanding. Perhaps you could explain things to Mr. Ferguson yourself?"
Explain things to him?
Felix pointed a trembling finger at York, his eyes bloodshot. "What on earth did my daughter do to you that you had to send her to jail?"
York's expression remained unchanged. "Dad, I didn't send Claudia to jail. Her own cousin, Lanny, identified her as the one who stole company secrets. That's why she was detained."
Jessica, her eyes swollen from crying, sobbed, "That's impossible! Lanny is an honest boy. He would never point a finger at Claudia!"
"We'll have to wait for the results of the police interrogation to know the specifics," York said with a helpless sigh.
Mark spoke up respectfully. "Mr. Ferguson, Mrs. Ferguson has surely been framed. Could you perhaps use your connections to get her released on bail first?"
York looked at Claudia's parents without a flicker of emotion.
For his daughter's sake, Felix finally swallowed his pride and bowed his head before York. "Please!"
York fell silent for a long moment. When he finally spoke, his tone was deliberately even, revealing nothing. "Dad, Mom... As CEO of the Ferguson Group, I have a duty to see this leak investigation through to its conclusion. I owe our employees a full accounting."
