From the second-floor corner, York watched Claudia's resolute departure without moving to follow.
Peter offered some well-meaning advice. "York, your divorce hearing is in three days. She just aired your private business in front of everyone, and this is the second time she's thrown away your ring. She's not coming back. Just sign the papers."
Without a word, York took the ring back from Darleen and left.
Good news travels slow, but bad news travels fast.
Overnight, the rumor that [York had cheated, fathered a child outside his marriage, and now was divorcing] spread like wildfire through their elite social circles.
York was urgently summoned back to the Ferguson Mansion.
In the vast living room, not only his grandfather and parents were present, but his two uncles as well.
Sewell was furious. "Your indecisiveness has caused this mess! I told you to divorce that girl long ago. What good has dragging it out done you?"
Sewell continued, "Now the rumors are everywhere! Everyone is just waiting to laugh at the Ferguson family!"
His uncles also chimed in. "York, you are the head of our family. If this isn't handled properly, your reputation will be damaged, and the Ferguson Group will suffer the most. You need to think clearly."
Wendy sighed, trying to reason with her son. "Before the hearing, you should go talk to Claudia and just get the divorce over with."
York sat calmly across from his elders and spoke softly. "Whether I get a divorce is my private affair. Even as my elders, you have no right to interfere."
Old Mr. Ferguson's cane struck the floor with a dull thud.
He berated York. "The Ferguson Group is the lifeblood of generations of our family! As the heir, you absolutely cannot have any scandals attached to your name. If you can't resolve this turmoil and divorce that Watkins girl, don't blame me for being ruthless with her family!"
York, Wendy, and Darleen all stood up almost simultaneously.
Their eyes met again for a few more tense seconds before York turned and walked out.
Late that night, at Blue Bay Estates.
York stood in a dark bathrobe, the belt loosely tied, the opening revealing a glimpse of his toned abs as he moved.
In the bedroom, he held a glass of liquor, his eyes fixed on the wedding photograph on the wall.
In the photo, Claudia, dressed in a white gown, leaned against him, her face radiant with happiness.
On the bed behind him, his phone was on speaker.
Peter's voice echoed in the room. "York, you know better than anyone how ruthless your grandfather can be. If you keep resisting, you'll not only harm Claudia but also drag her family down with you. Make this a clean break. Don't make her hate you!"
