York replied, "Ann has sacrificed too much for me. I couldn't refuse her."
Peter pressed, "So you're planning to divorce Claudia Watkins?"
York shot him a look. "I'm not divorcing Claudia."
Not wanting to discuss it further, York headed for the doctor's office.
Peter followed close behind. "York, for Ann and her son, you've already lost your marital home and your wedding ring. Claudia is going to be the next thing you lose!"
York stopped and turned around. "Shut up. Don't disturb the patients."
He started walking again, and Peter kept pace. "I struck a nerve, didn't I? That's why you don't want to hear it."
York stopped again, turning to face him.
Peter said, "Your sister heard you rushed to the hospital to take care of Ann. She flew abroad to tell Claudia everything."
York couldn't help but frown. "Why didn't you stop her?"
"To be honest," Peter said, "I'm hoping Claudia divorces you, too."
York was speechless.
The next day at noon, in Caledon.
Darleen left her hotel and took a taxi to the hospital where Claudia worked.
When Claudia got Darleen's call, she rushed to the hospital entrance. The two friends hugged tightly, spinning in a joyful circle.
Claudia chose a restaurant and treated Darleen to lunch.
They chatted as they ate, but the cheerful atmosphere slowly grew heavy.
Claudia knew Darleen couldn't keep things bottled up.
He parked in a temporary spot on the side of the road, unbuckled his seatbelt, and stared at the legal notice from the divorce lawyer lying on the passenger seat.
Ever since he had gone to Caledon to get her, only for her to throw away her wedding ring and refuse to return with him, they had barely spoken.
Their last text exchange was the message he had sent her the night he left.
He thought they were both taking time to cool off.
He never expected her to hire a lawyer and file for divorce.
His gaze drifted through the windshield, and he saw a taxi pull up in front of him.
Claudia stepped out, wearing a beige, belted A-line dress with three-quarter sleeves. The autumn wind tossed her long, silky hair, and for a moment, he couldn't look away.
York stared, his throat tightening as he looked at the woman he hadn't seen in so long.
He glanced down at the divorce papers on the seat beside him, then opened his door and got out.
