"Because I lost track of time, I was afraid they would get suspicious. So, I intentionally drove my car into the concrete barrier to stage a crash and distract them. It bought me enough time to scrub the security footage that could have ruined you."
As for why he had lost track of time, they both knew the answer.
Given how incredibly sore and exhausted her body had felt the next day, he certainly hadn't held back that night.
What truly shocked her, however, was that the scar on his brow had absolutely nothing to do with Bianca.
The lingering anger in Noreen's heart dissipated a little more.
She glanced down at his vice-like grip on her hand and deliberately challenged him, "What if you hadn't arrived in time?"
"What if I had actually slept with The Escort?"
Seth's fingers dug into hers. The forced calm in his eyes shattered instantly, replaced by a storm of predatory darkness.
"There are no 'what ifs'," he rasped, grinding the words out through clenched teeth. "I got there."
Noreen fought back a smile. "I'm talking hypotheticals. We were apart for five long years. A lot can happen in five years."
At the mention of their separation, the light in Seth's eyes dimmed.
His fingers remained locked with hers, tightening rather than loosening, as if he were desperately trying to claw back all the missed time and uncertainties of those years.
He lowered his head, his forehead nearly resting against hers, his voice heavy with emotion.
"I would be jealous."
"I would lose my mind."
"But I would never let you go."
...
There was no thirtieth day of the month this year, making the twenty-ninth New Year's Eve.
Noreen had booked their holiday dinner at The Jade Pavilion.
When they arrived, she discovered that the Harcourt family and the Naylor family were also dining there.
Rosalind Gilmore, still grateful for Wade Harcourt's previous kindness, went over with Noreen to say hello.
Seth sat perfectly rigid in his chair, behaving himself and deliberately avoiding any seductive eye contact with Noreen.
