'Is she throwing up because of my kiss?' Alistair thought.
His heart raced as he recalled how much wine she had downed. With a mix of concern and regret, he crouched beside her and gently patted her back.
Even someone like him could find himself in these awkward situations—comforting Audrey, offering her water, until she finally started to calm down. What a wild night!
The following morning, warm sunlight streamed through the curtains, nudging Audrey awake. She squinted, hummed a little, and then reached for what she thought was her pillow, preparing to get up.
'Wait, why is my 'pillow' so hard today?' she thought in a daze. As she slowly opened her eyes, she was surprised to find Alistair watching her, propped up on one elbow.
The air felt thick, almost frozen in that moment. In an instant, Audrey shot up, her eyes wide. 'Oh no! What happened last night?' she couldn't help but wonder.
Besides the pounding headache, everything felt okay, but she remembered the stories about what usually followed a night of crazy sex, and—'Wait! why am I wearing a bathrobe?' she wondered.
She glanced down at the robe wrapped around her and looked up at Alistair, feeling utterly confused. "How the heck did you end up in my bed?" To think she thought she was hugging a pillow, but it turned out to be his chest!
"This is my room," Alistair replied with an amused raise of his eyebrows.
Feeling utterly trapped, Audrey suddenly realized that this wasn't her guest room. Heat rushed to her cheeks as snippets of last night flooded back—her pleading for a hug, kissing him, and then throwing up all over him before sobbing and cuddling him to sleep.
'Oh my god! Talk about embarrassing!' she exclaimed inwardly.
With a little whimper, she pulled the covers over her head to hide. Eventually, she mustered up the courage to say, "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean for any of that to happen. I swear I'll never drink again!"
"It's all good." Alistair chuckled softly, clearly not too bothered, and looking much brighter than she felt.
She wanted to sneak out quietly, but just as she started to slip away, Alistair called out, "Aren't you going to join me for breakfast?"
"I can't. I'm in a rush for work. Let's eat together another time. I'll head out now, bye!" Without waiting for a response, she yanked the door open and hurried away.
There was no way she could sit down for breakfast with Alistair and act like nothing had happened after last night's awkwardness.
By the time Alistair stepped out of the kitchen with a plate in hand, Audrey was already in the elevator heading downstairs. He put his plate down, feeling uninterested in food, and was about to leave when he noticed the papers scattered across the table.
It was clear Audrey had left them out after reading in the living room last night. Alistair glanced at them casually and spotted "Brightview Group" written in bold letters.
After a moment of contemplation, he wiped his hands, stood up, and walked over to the window to make a call.
