My Most Precious Human novel Chapter 153

I was holding the phone next to my ear, feeling nauseated. The world around me was spinning. Martha shouted something over the phone. She was calling my name, but my brain kept refusing to face the reality.

"Lilith! Are you there?!" Martha yelled, finally breaking through my bewilderment.

"This can't be true… I know it can't be true!" I shouted, angry and desperate.

"That would explain why he didn't call you or text you back," she said, knocking me down with sudden realization.

"I got a text from him…" I mumbled, choking on the air I was breathing.

"What?! When?! Why didn't you say anything?!" Martha burst out.

I swallowed, preparing myself to tell her the truth. "He wrote that the child is his… He wrote ‘goodbye’ to me… That he was sorry…" I struggled to pull in a breath.

"Oh, God…" she muttered.

"I…" Fisting my hand, I squeezed out through my throat, "I slept with Draven."

"Oh, God!" she repeated, disgust and disappointment audible in her tone.

"What was I supposed to do?!" I snapped. "Sariel texted that it was over between us, and Draven is my mate!"

"You should have at least waited a day or two!" she thundered.

"Waited for what?!" I roared, "Should I stay, waiting for him to change his mind?! I'm not a saint, and I'm not perfect! I'm a human, and I do have my limits!"

Martha was silent for a while. "I'm sorry… I have no right to judge you… and if the King is truly dead-"

"Please…" I stopped her from finishing that sentence. "What if it was someone who collaborates with Elora who passed the message about his death? It is possible… We cannot say for sure that it is real."

I forced myself to do logical thinking. I used it as an anchor that could prevent me from going insane.

"You are right." Martha's voice became calmer.

"I… I can try calling him again…?" I suggested but needed Martha's support.

"Lilith…" She let out a deep sigh, "What if you are right, and he is alive? He could not answer your call because he doesn't want to talk to you. Either way, you won't know the truth. Could you handle this?" Her words pierced my heart even more than the last message from Sariel.

"Then I will force him to answer, God damn it!" I snapped.

"Lilith… I don't want you to hurt yourself. Just remember that I love you and I'm on your side, no matter what." I heard her smiling through tears.

"I love you too," I said, barely holding my tears, and suddenly realized, "You are no longer safe there. You and Kanan have to leave the Palace. If you need my help, I can get you-"

"Prince Kanan has already prepared our escape, so don't worry. He's the one with all the details, so call him if you'd like to know," she assured me.

I know that Sariel left them a group of bodyguards to protect them, but I couldn't be certain that their lives wouldn't be endangered once Elora claimed herself as a ruler. I didn't quite get how it was even possible for her to just sit on the throne, but I could bet that Kanan would tell me. I was going to call him once I finished talking with Martha, but there was something I had to do first…

I stared blankly at Sariel's number on my phone's screen. It took a lot of shaky breaths before I swiped my finger through the green phone symbol. My pounding heart could nearly burst out of my chest as I lifted the phone to my ear.

"So… who informed the Palace that the King is dead?" I decided to slightly change the subject.

"General Gotha was the one. I've just found out that the original message said that the King was missing, not dead. But I guess it wasn't enough for Elora, so she announced King Sariel died on the battlefield." Kanan gritted his teeth.

"What kind of game is she playing?!" I burst out, confused.

I always thought that she cared about Sariel. Of course, I knew that she was a psycho, but I figured that if there was one person she wouldn't want dead, it would be him. Now she announced him dead and took over the throne!

"Whatever my sick sister is doing, she didn't plan this alone. She isn't clever enough," Kanan stated, "The King leaves the castle, and all of a sudden, Elora announces she is pregnant. The board of nobles instantly marks her as untouchable, as the future mother of the royal pureblood. No one even thought of asking if the child is truly the King's! Elora's doctor showed evidence of her pregnancy, and that was it. In less than an hour, she became a big step closer to the throne. With the announcement of the King's death, she, as the mother of an allegedly future king, became a regent with access to the royal treasury and power over the vampire race…"

I gulped. It all worked out a little too perfectly for Elora to be a coincidence.

"Who do you think is Elora's partner in crime?" I asked.

Kanan coldly chuckled, "Who else?"

"JD," I muttered, answering my own question.

JD's notes sent to Elora sounded as if their relationship was informal at least. Now, I was becoming more convinced that Elora was JD's lover. She might have wanted Sariel before, but since he couldn't give her what she wanted, she decided to destroy him with JD's help… Certainly, it was merely my assumption, but it fitted. Still, two questions remained unanswered: what had happened to Sariel, and was Elora pregnant with his child… or JD's?

Talking to Kanan made me recover from the state of despair. The rational part of my brain processed what I had heard, making me feel more composed, but also less comfortable with my current situation. I had made my choice, and it wasn't about merely choosing Draven as my sex partner. I let Draven mark me as his mate, and as far as my knowledge went, no one could break the mate-bond after the claim. I only hoped that the wolf goddess could magically wink at me, making me feel as if I made the right choice. Having feelings for Draven wouldn't hurt either… But would it make this whole situation more bearable?

As for now, I needed to shut down everything that I could do nothing about, no matter how frightening and painful it was. In a couple of hours, we were supposed to start heading towards the Southern Woods Pack territory, and I was supposed to face my father…
