My Love Until the Last Goodbye (Mary and Maximus) novel Chapter 818

Diana and Maximus stepped out of the room, both looking exhausted and worried. It was already 10:00 a.m., and there was still no news about Peter. Celeste had finally fallen into a deep sleep after drinking the tea they had brought her.

Marcus and Valerie had left the hospital a few hours earlier to pick up John from Magnus’s house—they hadn’t seen him in months.

Alden was drained, but he refused to leave the hospital. Even though Serenity insisted on staying with him, he had sent her home with her parents. Peter’s surgery was taking too long, and he didn’t want her exhausting herself too.

Ethan had also been taken home with Serenity. Right now, the only thing that mattered was Peter’s condition. Despite their differences, everyone was praying for a successful operation.

After a long nap, Celeste woke up to find Alden sitting beside her. He looked exhausted. Not wanting to wake him, she carefully got up from the couch and stepped out of the room, only to run into Maximus and Diana.

"Maximus, has Dr. Wagner said anything?"

"No… Unfortunately, he’s still in surgery. We just have to keep waiting."

"Alright."

"Did you get some rest?"

"Yeah… The babies and I were completely worn out."

"I really wish you had gone home. You shouldn’t be pushing yourself like this."

"Don’t worry, Maximus, I’m fine! I just needed some sleep."

"Alright… But the moment I see you struggling, I won’t ask—I’ll just carry you out of here and take you to my father’s house. If you get sick, you won’t be able to help Peter. No matter what happens, I can’t let anything bad happen to you."

This woman was an angel, one that life decided I was meant to meet.

She, my children—big and small—my grandchildren, and the rest of my family were waiting for me. I knew I had to fight. I had to do everything I could to survive. But I couldn't ignore the feeling inside me that said… not everything would be okay. And Wagner knew it too. He was giving them hope, but that hope was fragile.

Still, I clung to it.

This time, I needed that 40% chance. I had to wake up. It was not a matter of wanting to—it was a duty. I couldn't leave my wife and children behind. Not again. Not this time.

When Celeste confirmed my suspicions about Galea earlier today, I had laughed to myself. Life was a damn joke. She was just a little girl when I was completely in love with Mary. And while I would’ve never looked at a child that way, the truth was, I never even noticed her back then. My entire world revolved around Mary.

If only I had paid more attention… maybe I could have helped that little girl. The truth was, when we cross paths with people, we don’t always see the weight they carry. I was lucky to have met Marcus. But Celeste had a hard life, and I hadn’t exactly made it any easier.
