Mary left the study carefully after hearing Maximus. Once she was in the hallway, he heard her running down the stairs. A smile appeared on Maximus’s face. Silently, he followed her and listened as she excitedly shared the good news with Emma. 

“Ma’am, but we haven’t decorated the house in ages. The decorations are probably broken or really outdated. 

“Emma! Come on! What matters is that we can decorate. This will be my first Christmas here, and I don’t care if the decorations are old. We’ll use whatever works, and maybe I can buy a tree with my savings.” 

Maximus was surprised to hear the two women worrying about money. That shouldn’t be an issue- money was never something his wife needed to worry about. Yet, she never asked him for anything 

“Mary!” Maximus called out as he stepped into the kitchen. 

“Yes?” 

“I’ve been thinking about your Christmas. This is the first one you’ll spend here. Maybe we can go buy what you need to decorate the house.” 

Mary’s eyes lit up, and a big smile spread across her face. 

“Really? That would be amazing! Maybe when you have time, you could-” she started cautiously, not wanting to ruin the moment. 

“Go get your coat. We’re going right now. Today’s my only free day.” 

“Yes! I’ll be quick!” she exclaimed, dashing upstairs. 

She swapped her shoes for warmer boots and returned in less than ten minutes. Meanwhile, Maximus pulled the car out of the garage. He had decided they didn’t need Matthew to come along this time–he wanted it to be just the two of them. By the time he brought the car to the front, Mary was already waiting, her expression like a child eager to be taken to the park. 

She climbed in, and the drive was quiet. Mary gazed out the window, enchanted by the city’s Christmas decorations. She rarely left the mansion, so just seeing the streets lit up was thrilling. 

Maximus parked at one of the many malls he owned and walked in with his wife to buy everything she needed. Mary admired the decorations but kept glancing at the prices. Most were quickly dismissed- she opened her wallet and realized she couldn’t afford anything in those stores. 

What had started as an exciting shopping trip for Christmas decorations was now becoming less fun. Maximus, noticing her hesitation, finally asked, “Why haven’t you picked anything?” 

“I… I don’t think I can afford it. I only brought a little money,” she admitted, lowering her head, worried he’d scold her for wasting his time. 

Maximus was taken aback. So that’s why she hadn’t chosen anything? Pulling out a sleek black card from his wallet, he took her hand and said, “Here. Buy whatever you like, Consider it a Christmas gift.” 

Mary’s eyes sparkled, but she hesitated. “But…”

“Use it before I change my mind!” he teased. 

Grinning, she began filling the cart with decorations. By the end, the bill was enormous, but all she had to do was swipe the card. 

“Well, are you happy now?” Maximus asked. 

“Yes!” she exclaimed. 

“We’re still missing something.” 

“What?” she asked, surprised. 

“The tree! You’re planning to have one, right?” 

“Oh, yes! I can buy that myself. Look, I have this,” she said, showing him the cash in her bag 

Maximus thought about insisting but decided against it. “Fine, you can buy the tree.” 

By the time they got back to the mansion, the employees helped unload the purchases and the tree. Dinner plans were scrapped to focus on setting everything up. Emma was thrilled to see the couple happily working together–it was the first time Maximus had ever helped put up a tree. Mary looked more relaxed than she had in ages, her face glowing with happiness. 

By 11 p.m., the tree was done. Emma brought them tea as Mary handed Maximus the star. 

“Your turn!” 

“What?” 

“You have to put the star on top!” 

“Oh… Alright,” he said, slightly embarrassed. 

Once the star was in place, Mary plugged in the lights, and the tree glowed beautifully. She stared at it with wide eyes, a tear rolling down her cheek. She couldn’t help but feel nostalgic–it was her first Christmas tree with her husband. He was her new family. Just for today, she allowed herself to imagine and hope that all their days together could be like this.
