Hearing Matthew’s report, Maximus gripped the steering wheel so tightly it was a wonder it didn’t snap. He was torn between wanting to strangle his wife and needing to catch her before she disappeared again. 

“Matthew, find out which bus she’s on. I’m going to get her.” 

Without hesitation, Matthew contacted the bus company and secured the necessary information. When Mary stepped off the bus, a group of men in black suits, their expressions hard and unyielding, surrounded her. 

“What? What’s going on? Who are you?” she stammered, alarmed. 

“Mary, don’t make a scene,” Maximus said, grabbing her firmly by the arm. 

He led her out of the terminal and forced her into his Maserati. His face was icy and rigid with anger. The ride back to the mansion was silent, but as soon as they arrived, Maximus’s tenuous calm shattered. 

“Tell me,” he said sharply, “why do you enjoy being with Peter?” 

“Why are you bringing him up now?” 

Mary snapped, irritation flickering in her voice. 

“Do you like working in a café? Living off tips? Running around with pink hair?” 

“What’s that supposed to mean?

“Exactly that! Did you enjoy how he treated you? Like some ordinary woman? He had you working, partying, hanging out with those useless, aimless friends of yours. Is that what you liked?” 

“Yes! That’s exactly what I liked!” Mary shouted, her voice breaking as tears spilled down her face. “I felt useful! I had my own money! I was independent!!!” 

“You idiot!” Maximus roared. “You should be grateful married you. But how could you understand that? You’re just a spoiled little girl coddled by her grandfather! You disgust me!” 

With that, he struck her across the face. 

Mary recoiled from the slap, her hand instinctively covering her stinging cheek. Her tears blurred her vision, but her voice held steady. 

“Go ahead, hit me again! But it won’t change what I said or how I feel.” 

Fury flared in Maximus’s eyes. He grabbed her by the hair, ignoring her struggles, and dragged her upstairs to the bedroom. Throwing her into the room, he shoved her to the floor and slammed the door shut, locking it behind him. 

“That’s where you’ll stay!” he shouted. “Think about everything you’ve done. I’ve never been cruel to you, Mary. You’re the ungrateful brat who ruined my life. Everyone thinks you’re sweet and innocent, but only I know the truth–you’re a liar and a fraud.” 

“Maximus! Let me out! I don’t want to stay with you, and you don’t want me either! Maximus, please!” she screamed, pounding on the door as tears poured down her face. 

Maximus leaned against the door, his fist throbbing from the force of the slap. His expression was dark

with rage, and his eyes burned with hatred. Her words echoed in his mind, striking a nerve. She had been happy before he took her away from that life. At first, he’d felt guilty watching her spirit wither, but then he remembered what he believed was her betrayal–the deal she and his grandmother had made. 

Clenching his fists, he muttered to himself, “She has to pay for deceiving me. If she hadn’t tricked me, I’d be with Alexia now, and she’d be my wife, not my mistress. 

He stormed to his room, grabbed a stack of papers, and left, slamming the door behind him. At that moment, Emma returned to the mansion, her face etched with worry. Matthew had messaged her, letting her know Maximus was bringing Mary back and urging her to stay close to keep an eye on things. 

“Emma, what are you doing here?” Maximus asked, his tone harsh. 

“I went out to look for the missus,” she replied carefully. 

“I don’t need you here tonight. Leave!” 

“But, sir, it’s late. I won’t have enough time to get home,” Emma protested, reluctant to leave. 

“Emma! Emma!” A piercing scream came from the second floor, interrupting them. 

“What’s happening?” Emma asked, alarmed. 

“Nothing. She’s throwing a tantrum. I don’t want you getting involved. I’ll handle her and make sure she doesn’t harm herself. You don’t need to be here, so if you value your job, you’ll leave. Ask Matthew to arrange a driver for you.” 

“But, sir, I can look after her…” 

“No, Emma! I’ll take care of her. If you’re still here in the morning, consider yourself fired!” 

“Sir, please,” Emma pleaded, her voice trembling. “Don’t do anything rash. The missus sounds very distressed. Please remember how much you once loved her. Where has that love gone? You told me you loved her. Don’t you remember?” 

“I loved the woman she pretended to be!” Maximus spat. “But now that her true colors are showing, I have no reason to love her. She’ll pay for what she’s done to me. She’ll learn what it means to cross Maximus Palmer.” 

“Sir, please…” 

“Get out, Emma! Or I’ll have someone throw you out!” he shouted, his voice cold and final. 

Emma hesitated for a moment, torn between her concern for Mary and her fear of losing her job. With a heavy heart, she turned and left, praying silently that the situation wouldn’t spiral further out of 

control.
